There are many (many) perspectives on addiction. Most of the funding that goes into addiction research takes a disease-centred approach, and I'm not entirely convinced that is the healthiest way to look at it (or at least I would contend that it's not the only way). And there are many sorts of addictions that a client might develop, depending upon the substance (and the "substance" could be anything ranging from alcohol to internet pornography). An addiction is an unhealthy relationship that we can't let go of (for various reasons), and psychotherapy is a way to allow us to look at our triggers and try to piece together what "healthy" looks like.

Being aware that you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery, one that takes incredible courage and strength. Facing your addiction without making excuses or minimizing the problem can be overwhelming. If you’re ready to make a change and eager to seek help, you can overcome your addiction and build a satisfying life for yourself. The ability to differentiate the behavior from one’s worth will offer the individual a greater understanding and compassion for themselves.

Whether you believe addiction is a disease, learned behaviour, or choice does not matter to me, what matters is that you want to move away from the affects of addiction. I work with those addicted to substances as well as those directly affected by someone else's addiction. It is said that for every one person addicted to substances, ten people are directly affected. I offer acceptance, understanding, and compassion for those affected. I will work with you to find methods that help you heal.

Approaches to addressing addictions really vary from one treatment setting to another. My approach focuses on helping people manage their addictions. Not everyone chooses abstinence, and not everyone needs to. In fact, for many problem drinkers learning to become a controlled drinker can offer a more sustainable way of living. I tend to work with people to help them manage their addictions in a way that is sustainable, and in a way that works for their personal situation.

I have experience supporting many clients through their recovery from addiction (alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex). I believe it is important to complete some inner work and understand how you perceive your addiction. For many individuals, it is coping mechanism to "escape" from challenges thoughts, emotions, feelings, and memories. I support my clients in viewing themselves as strong and resilient individuals, who are working on an recovery as opposed to defining themselves by their addiction. We work together to identify both internal and environmental triggers, to reduce the likelihood of relapse.

I work with people with addictions. Most of us are addicted to something. It's natural to want to feel good. Most addictions start from a place of pain -- an uncomfortable feeling, such as shame, or not feeling good about who we are. While whatever we're addicted to provides some relief, it doesn't last long, and we are once again back into a cycle of shame, relief, denial, etc. We have a well-developed pattern around our addictions. Together we will explore breaking your patterns as a necessary step in breaking the addiction, and look at how your core beliefs are impacting your view of yourself, and your relationship with others.

I work with couples dealing with addiction in order utilize one of the most important allies in an addict's support system, their spouse. This is possible only if there is adequate safety within the coupe and if the person with the addiction is willing to get individual support for the personal work required. I help the couple talk about their feelings and what they need, to understand each other and how to best support each other. If there are unhealthy dynamics in the couple, I help identify what these are and to make the changes necessary for healthier interaction and a stronger emotional connection.

Addictions seriously impact our lives and make it difficult to through our days. By understanding the underlying reasons behind developing the addiction in the first place, we can identify and deal with these concerns and reduce/eliminate the need for the addiction itself. By engaging in "self-acceptance" surrounding our behaviours during this healing process, we are more likely to have a positive self-concept throughout this journey. We want to stop "needing" the substance we are addicted to instead of judging the fact that we are addicted.

Merriam-Webster’s definition states: Addiction: a strong and harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble). The key word is harmful. In this light, one could even postulate people can be addicted to arguing and fighting, to the chemicals released from the adrenal gland during "fight or flight"? Did you know the actual term “addiction” was originally used in the slave trade? (S. Luper-Foy C. Brown (ed.) (1994). Drugs, Morality, and the Law. Garland). When a slave was sold to the “owner”, they were said to be addicted to their master which meant “tied to”. Well, if you and I can be tied to something… yes… we can be untied! www.jeffpacker.com
