Feeling out of control and unable to stop engaging in harmful behaviours can feel shameful, over-whelming and hopeless. My approach to addiction treatment is based in a harm reduction model. This approach acknowledges that maintaining abstinence may not be a realistic goal. Without judgement we will work together to set realistic goals that seek to reduce the negative impacts of your addiction. My understanding of addiction comes as a result of my academic background as well as having been in active recovery myself for the last 26 years. Without professional help from a full qualified addiction counselor the addiction frequently blocks and ultimately limits a person's ability to live a happy and productive life. Professional counseling will help people form their own basis for a meaningful recovery, by directly dealing with the underlying issues that create their cycle of addiction. Dealing directly with the addiction is critical in order for people to reach their full potential in life.

I view addiction not just as a problem but an unhelpful solution to a different problem. Often, we turn to addiction to get away from something else. It is that “something else” that we would try to understand in our sessions. We will then work to find healthier ways of coping to replace the addiction.
