Brantford has had a few scenes from films shot in the city, including Welcome to Mooseport and Where the Truth Lies.  A more recent film was Weirdsville that was filmed in downtown Brantford.  The residents poked fun at the downtown area, saying that not much needed to be done for the downtown to look haunted and decayed.  Some other entertainment that occurs in the area is the annual air show, where the Snowbirds perform.  Other attractions include a venue where weekly pro-wrestling matches are held.  The Sanderson Centre has live performances, along with many other places featuring live musical entertainment.  The sports teams in Brantford include the Brantford 99er’s Hockey Team, Brantford Red Sox baseball team, and a couple of different basketball teams. The Wayne Gretzky International Hockey Tournament is held annually in Brantford.1 The Kinsmen Club of Brantford has many different entertainment events that occur throughout the year, one of which being the weekly Bingo game every Thursday evening.

Even though there is not a large population base in Brantford, there are quite a few churches—thirty-five.  The different denominations include Anglican, Catholic, Baptist, Mormon, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, and United Methodist addresses the spiritual components of resolving issues and bringing closure to past issues.  There are also three different temples—Sunni Islamic temple, Sufi Islamic temple, and a small Sikh temple.  On the other side of the table there is the Brantford Golf & Country Club which was founded in 1879 and is the fourth oldest golf club in North America.  Additionally, in 2008, Brantford will be hosting the Allan Cup, which is in its 100th year of the event.  The Allan Cup is a similar to the Stanley Cup except that it is for senior amateur men’s ice hockey playoffs.  The original trophy was donated in 1908 by Sir H. Montagu Allan to replace the Stanley cup which is now used by the professional hockey teams as their championship trophy.

Mental Health in Brantford

In comparison to the rest of Ontario, Brantford has poor mental health, shorter life expectancy, and higher infant mortality rates.2 Although this is true, the area has also done many things to help improve health and make healthcare more accessible. There are also many mental health services that are available to help families, couples, and individuals who are struggling.

The CMHA is one great example of a program dedicated to mental health. They provide community programs to work with large groups of people, individual counseling, couple and family counseling, and many other services that help people of all ages who are dealing with all sorts of problems.3

Current Initiatives

On top of making healthcare a bigger priority, the city of Brantford has other plans for the progression of this community. Their strategic plan involves making the area a safer place, providing more services to the population, and improving the quality of life for the city overall.4 There will be managed growth, environmental progress, and more jobs created, as well as many other things that will be very helpful for everyone living here.
