Couples coming to counselling are asked to be honest about their own motivation levels, skepticism and hopes for therapy as part of the assessment. Problems are initially identified in both one on one sessions, and then lead into mutual encounters which are guided to elicit authentic feelings and engender empathy, understanding & appreciation. If a relationship is badly damaged (such as by infidelity) exercises for unraveling contempt are presented. Often in couples work, individuals become aware of certain cultural, inter-generational or early life patterns that get played out and learn strategies to manage them. When a relationship has run its course the work may be about "farewell".

Our most intimate relationships are where we are often challenged the most to grow. Much of my work with couples is helping each person feel entitled to their feelings and feel able to advocate for their needs within the relationship. So often we have expectations of how our partner or spouse is supposed to be, how we are supposed to be with them and there are unspoken expectations to navigate between us. These assumptions can easily lead to very destructive patterns that we act out with the person we want to feel the closest to. Our work is to strengthen ourselves from the inside out so that we can meet our partner "full of ourselves" and then find ways to be together that are a win win!

I support one individual in a relationship and do not communicate directly with the other individual unless I receive permission to do so. This approach to couples counselling is especially helpful in situations where one person is thinking of leaving the relationship or in cases where emotional, verbal or more obvious forms of abuse may be happening. I can support you to take a step back, get clear on what you would like for yourself and the relationship, and take action to get where you want to be.

Both individuals and couples move through phases during their life. Transitions take place within us, and within the ongoing relationship as well. A counselor can help navigate these changes and put them into perspective. Designing a new relationship, such as after a separation or divorce, takes finesse, trust and courage. it is very possible to have a good relationship after divorce! Just lie individuals, every couple is different and has different ever-changing needs. Together we explore relationship patterns, healthy and toxic (Gottman Couple Theory, and EFT), and we look at the overall evolving of the relationship.

Couples therapy involves learning more about each other and learning to get your needs met. Through learning interpersonal skills, emotion regulation skills, mindfulness and distress tolerance you may learn more about each other and your relationship. What are the most common couples' issues? If you are thinking "communication, conflict, sex, money, child rearing" you are correct. However, most therapists will go after the symptom on each side of the couple fence thinking that the way to effective change is by getting each party to "work" on their respective "issue". Many times the parties don’t agree but comply. Imagine if you could align the unconscious brains of a couple and stop the "working on your issues" part that has become so popular in therapy settings?
