Family counseling is a very powerful tool to assist a family in distress to understand the dynamics that are part and parcel of the human experience and to make choices toward a more balanced family experience. Appreciating that we live in times when family constellations are varied and diverse, what remains the same is that 'the family' provides a context in which we all desire to feel safe, loved and loving.

In my work with family estrangement, I offer a compassionate and nonjudgmental space to navigate the complex mix of grief, guilt, relief, and longing that often accompanies distance from family. Estrangement can bring both pain and protection, and I support clients in understanding the boundaries, histories, and emotional needs involved. Together, we explore ways to process loss, strengthen self-trust, and find meaning in chosen connections and personal growth. My approach honours each person’s story and the courage it takes to face such deeply personal and often hidden experiences.

Gestalt therapy is a systems‐oriented, immediate‐experience‐oriented, and affect‐oriented therapy that is highly effective for families. Unlike other therapies, gestalt regards the client system's emergent processes as the central focus, and it emphasizes that growth occurs as the family and its members are helped to greater self‐awareness and responsibility for their own functioning. We all learn differently, express differently, and quite often perceive experiences differently because we bring a different "lens" and that is why your counsellor needs to be CREATIVE and FLEXIBLE. As parents we feel a deep responsibility to be these great parents and raise remarkable kids, but life isn't so easy and we are far from perfect. We need to give ourselves a break sometimes because we are only doing the best we can with what we have. Sometimes we just need a little help along the way. Marianne and Ray use the Satir method of family therapy. We believe that when parents are having issues with their children a whole family approach is advisable. We use a warm and nurturing approach. The emphasis is on improving communication amongst all family members. Everyone's voice gets heard and conflict resolution is generally easily attainable.

In working with families I am most interested in ways patterns replicate through generations. From this place of awareness families, and particularly parents, can make choices about their more preferred ways of relating. I love including playfulness into family sessions such as exploring a forest for what reminds each family member of their perspective of home.

Each family has its own unique personality that impacts the functioning of its members. When working with the family, I help improve their ability communicate openly to challenging issues and work through ups and downs in their relationships.

It is not uncommon in families for patterns to be set and sometimes these patterns are not healthy or helpful for family relationships, or individual mental health. We often learn to tolerate our family members’ behaviour and have difficulty speaking up or expressing how their behaviour impacts us. In my sessions with families, I encourage open, honest communication and ensure that each individual feels validated and gets equal time to be heard.
