San Mateo was established in 1894, and is located in the San Francisco Bay area of California. San Mateo has a rock outcropped peninsula known as Coyote Point Park. This is also a popular beach area to visit, along with a museum showing exhibits that contain some of the best natural history displays in California. The climate is also very comfortable, with a Mediterranean environment that is shielded from the Pacific Ocean breezes. San Mateo High School has one of the most prominent performing arts centers outside of San Francisco and is definitely a place worth visiting. Another great family outing is visiting the San Mateo Arboretum, which is located in Central Park. There are many old trees located in the Arboretum and a Japanese garden that was designed and dedicated to the city in 1966.1

Mental Health in San Mateo

The greater Bay Area enjoys better mental health than other areas of California. Just 3.4 percent of adults suffer from a serious mental illness, which is lowest in the state. Only 7 percent of the area's children have a serious emotional disturbance, which is also lowest in the state.2 Nevertheless, many children, adolescents, and adults in San Mateo require mental health care for a variety of mental health and chemical dependency issues.

The Mental Health Association of San Mateo County (MHASMC) provides comprehensive support services for county residents. In particular, the MHASMC provides social support services that seek to integrate mentally ill residents into the community as much as possible. Friendship Centers have been established throughout the county, and serve as locations where adults with mental illnesses can come together to socialize, have fun, play games, and relax. The Support and Advocacy for Young Adults in Transition (SAYAT) program helps 18-23 year olds transition to an independent and self-sufficient life. Many other programs are available. Current Education

People interested in becoming a counselor must first obtain the appropriate level of education. Palo Alto University offers several master's degree programs that lead to careers as a professional counselor. Students can concentrate in family counseling, addictions and recovery counseling, or in crisis and trauma counseling. Classes focus on helping students acquire the knowledge, skills and tools required to be an effective clinician. Graduates of the program are eligible for licensure in California, as well as in many other states. For more information about Palo Alto's graduate programs in counseling, call 650-417-2023.4
