Sometime in the 19th century, Englishman H.J. Brewer peered over the Fraser River from New Westminster and the land he saw reminded him of his native country of Surrey, England. Eventually, in 1879, Surrey became officially incorporated. This is how the name "Surrey" for the area that is part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District came into being.
