Our approach to assisting clients with depression is unique in that it takes the form of a number of approaches to counselling combined. This is important because not every individual responds to all elements of a single approach in the same manner. To be most effective as a counsellor in Calgary, we assess clients needs and together come up with an approach that will yield the most positive counselling outcome, using elements from many different approaches to therapy combined.

Depression can make everything in life more difficult. Counselling has been shown to help with depression and its symptoms. After discussing your goals, I can work with you to create lasting and effective coping skills to help reduce the feelings of depression. Depression is finally being recognized and accepted as something that any person can experience. I do not believe that there is any one “magic cure” for depression. However, when given the option, the most productive approach seems to be a combination of medication (natural-based or not, depending on preference) and one-on-one therapy (not to exclude group therapy as an additional resource). Without being too simplistic, the root of most depressions is the presence of anger which has been turned inward. Most of my clients have responded well to therapy when they are given a safe, non-judgmental place to explore the roots of their anger (see notation on “Anger Management”).

In assisting clients to overcome depression, I help to identify negative thought patterns and challenge those that contribute to hopelessness and despair. By adding a mindful component, clients learn to increase their awareness of thoughts and feelings, accept the full range of human emotions, and approach themselves and others with greater compassion.

Depression Counselor
Kevin Fleming, Ph.D.
Coach/Change Agent/Consultant
At Home or Private Discreet Intensives
Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. Instead, why not try a natural and arguably more effective way to not just change your mind, but change the brain--where the depression is rooted. Contact us at kevin@kevinflemingphd.com.

While depression has many symptoms, it is characterized by a shift in ones moods to feeling sadness or discouragement. There are times when the mood swing is short in duration and one comes out of it naturally. There are other times when this mood swing becomes severe or lasts too long. It is at these times that counselling can support a person to address the underlying stresses and restore balance to ones life.
