Depression can feel like overwhelming sadness, or maybe like you are in a "funk" that you can not get out of. People often start to isolate themselves, and focus on negative thoughts. I offer a warm, safe place to share your feelings, examine your relationships and perceptions that may be contributing to your depression. I introduce concrete suggestions that will help you get your back on track. People frequently feel a sense of relief after sharing their burdens. In discussing experiences people are often able to view themselves differently and gain insight into how they can more effectively deal with situations and relationships.

I use a CBT approach with depression and also utilize EMDR as a potential option to use. I gather a full history, help look at negative automatic thoughts and core beliefs that may have developed over time, and then work with develop more adaptive beliefs for individuals. I work with individuals to meet them where they are at and work together towards change. I like also using some tools from Acceptance and Commitment therapy. Clients may find that they are able to identify some areas of strength and feel like the adaptive beliefs can be more believable. My hope is that individuals can feel like they have the tools to effectively manage depression.

Clients struggling with depression have shared with me that my approach and the strategies that they used in their journey were exceptionally helpful to reaching their goals. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique and EMDR as the core strategies when working with depression. It is important to develop your own voice, to tell your story. Studies have shown that the key to successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship which means the development of mutual trust and respect between the client and therapist.
