Do you struggle with a addiction? Has it impacted your life in a negative way? Are you ready to understand your addiction? I know making the first call and attending your first session can be stressful. I hold no judgement and strive to create a safe space for you to do the vulnerable work called healing. Much of my education and training has been in understanding trauma and the many trauma responses. Oftentimes addiction has served as a way to feel safe, feel not numb, and, or as a way to cope.

Addictions can appear in many forms including substance addictions, internet addiction, sex addiction, gambling addiction, shopping addiction, pornography, social media, excessive exercise, food, etc. Strong cravings with a loss of control can lead people to become addicted in spite of possible dire consequences. Counselling is one of several possible treatments available for addictions. Individual, group and family therapies have been found to be helpful in order to inform a client regarding the harmful effects the addiction may have on themselves, their friends, family and society. Promoting physical, emotional and spiritual well being is often critical for the rehabilitation process.

Often in life, stress, responsibility and unhappiness can lead to managing/medicating with a variety of substances; marijuana, alcohol, gambling, sex, internet, drugs, ect. This can lead to an unbalance in the usage of these substances, create a significant strain and negative affect on relationships, family, work and one self. We will work to uncover the motivating force that has driven to substance abuse and help to regain control. Through this work we will strive to regain a healthy and balanced life, free of addiction or dependency.

I use a trauma informed harm reduction approach to addiction. We work together to discover what the motivation is to use and what the motivation is to stop using. Utilizing the 6 stages of change, we can work collaboratively to progress towards a positive change in usage. Learning healthy habits and alternatives to substance use is also part of developing a routine to stay more positive and healthier. Conversations about self-esteem, the ability to attend detox and rehabilitation may come up.
