I work with clients to manage symptoms of depression, which can be accompanied with a sense of helplessness and hopelessness that can create a negative valence around an individual’s daily functioning. A persistent feeling of sadness and doom can be accompanied with a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable. While the causes of depression can be related to brain chemistry, genetics, stressful life events, and medical conditions, CBT can be effective in identifying the interactions between one’s thoughts, behaviours, emotions, and their environment. Healthy coping mechanisms such as eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, and managing stress levels can help combat depression

As human beings, we mostly ignore the flashing red engine light warning us that a tune up is in order. We put our heads down and keep going and before we know it we're just not functioning right. My role in helping you through depression is reconnecting you with your needs: emotional, physical, mental, spiritual, relational, and occupational, so that you become your best champion in meeting your needs and feeling more connected to yourself and others.

Depression is a condition that varies greatly between each presentation. It often is a downstream effect of other dynamics and relationships that takes a serious toll on the body, the nervous system, digestion, relationships and emotional well-being. My approach to treating depression begins with respect and understanding of the individual experience, their past, present, and concept of the future. I take that understanding of past experience, and beliefs of the future, pain in the present, and to provide safety, support, and strategy to improve your well-being and cultivate resilience through life's significant challenges. Depression can also look like anger, fatigue, isolation, etc.

Depression is so very common in people seeking therapy, and it is also a thief which steals our quality of life from us. It steals our joy and happiness, our energy and motivation, and sometimes even our desire to live. It is a trickster, too, telling us lies by painting our lives and the world as dark and negative in nature until we come to believe it. Counselling or therapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, can help. I have seen depression in action and it helps me appreciate how much it can hurt. I have deep compassion and believe in your capacity to heal. I will never tell you to "just get over it" and can make recommendations that will help.

Depression is a medical term that describes a mood but if we simply look at the overall meaning of the word, it means to "press down". Clearly, a person who suffers from 'depression' fits the definition as a 'person who is pressed down'. i am NOT arguing that depression is a simple issue, rather that there are REASONS that a person feels 'pressed down' and at least part of the process of recovery is to first identify then lift the burden that is 'pressing down' the person.

Being able to talk about our experiences and allow our feelings to surface is a first step toward unlocking ourselves from the weight of depression. The therapeutic approaches I draw on to support your shift out of a state of depression to a happier, more hopeful perspective will depend on your unique circumstances. f safety and trust feel confident to start sharing your experience with me, knowing that you are seen and understood. Often we have not had a place to share our struggles where we felt heard and accepted. Even the small shift in perspective that can be the result is enough to begin change.

Depression counseling offers a supportive environment for individuals to explore and address the complex factors contributing to their depression. Evidence-based approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and mindfulness techniques help clients challenge negative thought patterns, process difficult emotions, and develop coping strategies. By fostering self-awareness, building resilience, and providing validation, counselling assists clients to navigate the challenges of depression, empowering them to reclaim a sense of hope, purpose, and well-being in their lives.

Depression is extremely complex - at times it can completely turn your life upside down and rob you of any joy or happiness that you previously felt. Yet other times it can also show up in more subtle ways throughout your life, almost unknowingly at first. Every person is different but one commonality with depression is that it can make you feel incredibly alone and self-deprecating. Isolation feeds depression and hinders our functioning. My aim is to create a compassionate relationship so that you don’t feel alone. I’ll offer empathy and kindness while we gently work as a team to find what works for you in your journey towards a healthier mind.
