I assist people in working with difficult emotions and knee jerk reactions that can be problematic for the person in question and those around them. My approach is not to bury or suppress anger but to provide people with the coping skills to be with and work through anger in a way that does not hurt anyone and can at times provide people with positive results. I don't believe in programs that help people to count to 10 and bury their anger. Anger can be a motivator but when it is untamed and knee jerk reactions are indulged it can be a destroyer of relationships. Working with anger involves honesty and hard work in-between counselling sessions. Check out my 8-week MBSR program for anger

Anger management counseling can help to identify stressors and learn the steps to stay calm in the face of anger. The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

Similar to other emotions, anger can be seen in both a positive and negative light. It is a cue that change is needed. Generally speaking it is an invitation for acceptance, an altered perspective, or the establishment of establishing new boundaries in one's life. Anger can serve as a catalyst to problematic behaviours including addictions and is an important issue to address in therapy.

I use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness to work with those who are having difficulties controlling their anger. CBT will help you learn to identify your triggers (the things that make you angry) and help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and your behaviour that follows a triggering situation. When you have a better understanding of what makes you angry, and how your body responds to the anger, then you are better able to control your responses. Mindfulness will help you achieve greater present-moment awareness.

Excessive anger can damage our relationships and friendships. It can also put our mental and emotional health in jeopardy if we internalize and bottle up feelings of intense anger . I can help you identify roots of anger which may be buried in emotional trauma, addiction, grief, or other issues. Through psychotherapy we can work on creating new responses and coping mechanisms and slow down the cycle of anger from reproducing itself and causing harm.

Our emotions point to our needs. All of the emotions are important, and some are more difficult than others. There are steps to be taken to get a handle on your anger. First you must recognize that anger is just as important as any other emotion. We need it to be able to understand that there is a problem to be solved. Once we recognize that anger is pointing to a problem to be solved, we need to start to problem solve. No-body has to get hurt. Like all of the other emotions, anger will pass. Learn from it, use it constructively, you will be glad you did.

I believe that anger is just the tip of the emotional iceberg - 90% of what we are really feeling is hidden underneath, but anger is the feeling we are quick to identify and hold on to. Often, when a person is reacting with anger, it is because they may be feeling disrespected, not heard, or have learned that anger is the only way to respond. I work on teaching people impulse control, to take a step back and have a time out, to really look at 'what am I reacting to?' Learning to identify triggers, improve assertive communication and teach strategies to regulate the various emotions that are associated with anger.

Oftentimes, anger can serve as a way to communicate our frustrations in a way that is direct, powerful and demonstrates the gravity of our experience. However, anger can also make us feel out of control and overshadow the true message we had wished to communicate. In my work with clients in this area, I strive to map your emotional experience, uncovering the potential messages that lie beneath angered responses. This mapping can be the guide that allows you to begin healing triggers and emotional dysregulation, acknowledge them in the moment, and step into your preferred way of communicating.
