I believe that anger is just the tip of the emotional iceberg - 90% of what we are really feeling is hidden underneath, but anger is the feeling we are quick to identify and hold on to. Often, when a person is reacting with anger, it is because they may be feeling disrespected, not heard, or have learned that anger is the only way to respond. I work on teaching people impulse control, to take a step back and have a time out, to really look at 'what am I reacting to?' Learning to identify triggers, improve assertive communication and teach strategies to regulate the various emotions that are associated with anger.

Anger is a normal and healthy emotion and we all get angry from time to time. However, when anger turns destructive and/or self-destructive and brings problems into your personal and professional life, you need to seek support to learn how to manage your anger better. In the process, you will learn how to relieve the symptoms and recognize the signs of anger, increase your confidence and self esteem level, enjoy stronger and healthier relationships with your loved ones and coworkers, learn how to express yourself and your emotions with confidence and without anger, and live more balanced life both mentally and emotionally.

Oftentimes, anger can serve as a way to communicate our frustrations in a way that is direct, powerful and demonstrates the gravity of our experience. However, anger can also make us feel out of control and overshadow the true message we had wished to communicate. In my work with clients in this area, I strive to map your emotional experience, uncovering the potential messages that lie beneath angered responses. This mapping can be the guide that allows you to begin healing triggers and emotional dysregulation, acknowledge them in the moment, and step into your preferred way of communicating. Anger management counseling can help to identify stressors and learn the steps to stay calm in the face of anger. The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

I don't believe anger is something we need to manage. Anger is an emotion that we all feel. When it comes out in ways that feel problematic it is often due to a build up of so many emotions resulting in feelings of overwhelm that create an automatic response that is out of our own control. We can work together to understand what is bringing on this overwhelm and learn ways to understand and respond to those emotions allowing you to feel more in control again.

We guide our clients through a comprehensive study of all their emotions and feelings, how to identify them, as well as understanding their source. We commonly use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Art-based Therapy, as well as Rational Emotive Therapy to assist our clients with this goal. Once a better understanding has been established, the next step is interpersonal skills building, with a specific focus on assertive communication strategies. The practical application of these strategies is paramount to our clients achieving their goals, and much time is devoted to the development and practical application of these new skills.

Anger is a healthy and natural emotion when expressed in a mature and appropriate way. However, when anger is left untreated and gets out of control, it can lead to child abuse, domestic violence, as well as physical and verbal abuse. Anger management counseling provides an opportunity to learn more about our anger. During the counseling process clients will gain an emotional awareness and learn problem solving skills, which improve a person's frustration and tolerance levels in stressful situation. The ultimate goal in anger management counseling is to improve the way we deal with anger in order to have and maintain good relationships especially with the one's we love.

Anger is a natural emotion but because it can be harmful to our relationships, unlike other emotions, it is not encouraged to be expressed. Understanding anger as a protector that is covering up for other underlying emotions such as shame, fear, exhaustion, anxiety, guilt, rejection, regret, and so on, can change our relationship with our anger to become a healthy aggression instead, and communicate assertively to help our needs met. At Inward counselling, based on every individual unique needs and responses to therapy, we use integrative approaches including Polyvagal and CBT, and somatic and holistic modalities such as mindfulness and internal family systems therapy.

I use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness to work with those who are having difficulties controlling their anger. CBT will help you learn to identify your triggers (the things that make you angry) and help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and your behaviour that follows a triggering situation. When you have a better understanding of what makes you angry, and how your body responds to the anger, then you are better able to control your responses. Mindfulness will help you achieve greater present-moment awareness.
