The culture in Kingston is very lively with artistic and entertainment, hosting several different festivals throughout the year.  These annual festivals include the Limestone City Blues Festival, the Kingston Canadian Film Festival, Fanfayr, the Buskers’ Rendezvous, Sheep Dog Trials, Jazz Festival, and Chilifest.  The different arts include visual and media, as well as performing arts.  Local artists participate in the different exhibition programming of the two different non-profit venues for contemporary arts.  There are also artists from around the country and the world, not just from the local city area. This is in an effort to ensure that the venues follow the guidelines of their educational mandates.  The several different theaters have helped to keep the music and theater options alive and well.  There is also a Symphony Orchestra that performs at the Grand Theatre.  The city has seen many musicians and groups born, such as Steppenwolf, Bryan Adams, Avril Lavigne, The Mahones, and several other musicians.

Sporting activities is very popular and prominent in the city of Kingston, such as hockey, sailing, diving, golf, curling and rugby.  Even though this is under some discussion and debate, the city holds onto the claim that they are the birthplace of ice hockey, which occurred in 1886 of a game played between Queen’s University and the Royal Military College of Canada.  They play for the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and is still recognized as the world’s oldest rivalry.  The International Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Kingston, which was established in 1943. Sailing is also a hot spot for fresh-water sailing and holds an annual Olympic-training Regatta every August.  It is also listed as a top yacht racing venue in the U.S. even though this city is in Canada.  The area is also a destination for fresh-water wreck diving, with shipwrecks being preserved because of the fresh water.1

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Kingston

Kingston statistics have shown that approximately 53% of the city's population is married, and living with a partner.2 Although this figure, when related to the total population of the city, shows the number of people who are actually married, it fails to describe the state of their marriage. Strained marriages can lead to divorce, and Kingston has an unusually high divorce rate at 14%. The risk of domestic violence and harm to children also increases with these figures, but there are various organizations which attempt to deal with this.

Family Service Ontario is one name which represents 42 different organizations across Ontario which aim to provide quality family counselling. They offer individual, family and couples counselling as well as marriage preparation courses, family violence programs and specific programs for single parents. In Kingston, they are represented by the K3C Community Counselling Centres, and can be contacted on 613-549-7850.3

The Men's Project is a non-profit counselling agency for men (and their families). They offer group and individual counselling programs specifically oriented at men, as well as anger management programs, fathering group programs and emotional intelligence programs. Those interested can contact them on 613-230-6179.

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Domestic violence is a scarring experience, particularly for young adults and small children. The Kingston Frontenac Anti-Violence Coordinating Committee (KFACC) continues to promote awareness about domestic violence, in order to reduce the number of such incidences. KFACC includes law enforcement and justice authorities, as well as shelter, housing and counselling services. Children who are being victimized can call them on their 24 hours helpline on 1-800-668-6868. Women can call 613-544-6424.

The Kingston Police Force takes domestic violence very seriously, and offer protection for the victims. They conduct full investigations on any reported incidents, and will lay charges if reasonable grounds for doing so exist. Their crisis line is 613-546-1777.4
