While psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements, choosing to take part in therapy is the beginning of an adventure.  You are showing great courage!  Sometimes the trip is pleasant and enlightening; at other times it is challenging, emotional and lonely.  It is never boring!  While therapy is not often straight-forward (two steps forward, one step back), psychotherapy has been shown to have benefits for individuals, families and couples.  Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress.
A key component of client success in therapy is the creation of a positive, therapeutic relationship with the counsellor, Therefore, I'd like to share some information about me.  I have an MA in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy earned from Wilfrid Laurier University.  I am a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (#002501).
I have experience working with individuals, couples and families as they cope with challenges around grief, chronic or terminal illness, relationships, parenting, anxiety, depression, anger management, life transitions and stress.
My specific area of research has been working with individuals who are undergoing palliative care or have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, along with their partners and families.
My approach to therapy is strengths-based and multi-faceted--drawing on techniques from Narrative Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Attachment Theory, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.  I believe that there is 'more going right with a person, couple or family, than wrong' and that the work we do together is to find and explore strengths and supports that you already have, as you work on the issues that brought you to therapy.
I use a variety of techniques in therapy, as we work together to discover what will work best for you.  These techniques often include dialogue, cognitive re-framing, awareness/mindfulness exercises, art, journal writing, role plays and recommended reading.  I may ask you to consult with your health practitioner regarding any treatments that could help with your your challenges.  You have the right to refuse anything that I suggest, and can leave therapy at any time.
Sessions are scheduled for a 50-minute hour at a fee of $100 per session.  The frequency of sessions is based on our discussions of how often you would like to me, my availability, as well as what may be therapeutically in your best interest.
Before our first session, we'll talk on the phone so I can get a broad idea of what you are looking for.  At our first session, we will talk more specifically about what is bringing you to therapy and what you are looking for.  I'll suggest some ideas of how we can work together and what I can do that could be helpful.  If we both agree that working together is a good idea, I'll ask you to complete a Service Agreement that sets out the our roles and responsibilities.
If you would like more information, or book an initial telephone consultation; please contact me.
