The first thing I want to do is get to know who you are. Too many therapists approach this through the lens of a theory and they only see what the theory suggests is important. I want to see you on your own terms.

Kitchener, Ontario is the eleventh largest metropolitan area in Canada. The city offers an abundance of historical attractions as well as family-oriented fun for entertainment value. One of the Mennonite family’s homes is a historic museum, located in the heart of the city. Over the last few years, this area has committed to renew and clean up the downtown by converting the dying mall into office space, relocating a theatre, and turning an old department store into a children’s museum. These renovations are aimed at making the city more ideal for families with children and teenagers. Other renewal initiatives include a new city hall, and implementing a farmer’s market, where families are guaranteed to find great priced items, while interacting with other community members. The town has a multitude of cultural highlights. Some of the different events include the Open Ears Festival, Blues, Brews & Barbecues and the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest; all of which prove to be fun and entertaining for the entire family. In terms of education, Alpine, Bridgeport, and Clemens Mill are three of several public schools within the district.1
Mental Health in Kitchener
Kitchener, formerly the Town of Berlin, is a medium-sized city in Ontario province, with a population roughly 200,000. While Kitchener is one of the most educated cities in the country, and has one of the lowest unemployment rates at 6.6 percent, the city has experienced a rise in the cost of housing steadily over the years.2 This has led to many people moving out of their homes, and settling into ghetto neighbourhoods.
Unsurprisingly, health issues have also escalated, and it is estimated that 14 percent of the population has a disability.3 However, the local government is doing its best to cater to the needs of all those who suffer from mental disabilities. The Canadian Mental Health Association have their head office in Kitchener, and they work towards improving the standard of living of mental health patients.4
Addiction is another major problem, and the Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre provides care and specialized treatment for those who are dealing with it. They can be reached on any of the following numbers:
519-746-1919
519-279-6078
The risk of suicide is very real, and the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council continues to spread awareness in order to reduce incidences of suicidal behaviour. They conduct workshops and talks, and can be called in an emergency on: 514-799-1813.5
Current Initiatives
The Enabling Minds project was launched in 2005, with the goal of creating awareness about mental health problems, thereby eliminating the barriers for those who are mentally disabled and wish to participate in physical activities. They encourage mental health patients to engage in exercise in order to reduce the risk of further diseases, and improve their lifestyle and well-being.
