Having trained as a child and youth worker I am able to work with a variety of issues facing children. I am experienced in building a strong relationship with children and providing them with a space to learn and grow so they can express their thoughts and emotions in a healthy manner. All of my work with children/youth includes the caregiver/parent in every aspect of the work. I do not believe in undermining the child's authority in any manner. Much of the work with children/youth should include their most important caretakers in fully influence the change. I have many years of experience in issues regarding child/family work in community and hospital settings. In addition I am very informed about the resources that may assist your child/family needs. if I cannot assist you I will ensure that you are directed to the resources that will help you out.

Children’s behaviour is often a reflection of their internal experience. Including parents/caregivers in therapy can provide the opportunity for parents to help their child better understand their emotional experiences, to facilitate helpful communication, and to provide an environment that fosters both security and independence. There are a wide range of issues that affect children - they are vulnerable to many kinds of maltreatment and increasing stressors in our culture. However children often find it difficult to express their feelings and fears, which means that problems can be left undetected and unresolved. It is helpful then, to seek professional help if a child seems unhappy or distressed. With children, the construction of a trusting relationship between counsellor and client is especially important. Sometimes the counsellor will use puppets or sandboxes or play therapy to allow the child to tell their own story. In a safe trusting environment, the child can find their way towards emotional health.

My approach when working with children under 12 years old is to ensure that they are provided with a positive and safe experience of therapy. I prefer to tailor therapy to their developmental stage by creating a fun environment that may involve play, art, and activities during sessions. Discussions about their interests, skills, and special talents and abilities are at the forefront of our therapeutic conversations to help build confidence and feelings of positivity. My background in relational therapy may invite parents or siblings into sessions as well. I have to accept that I have a heart for children! Growing up in today's world is a whole new challenge with innumerable choices, the rights, the wrongs and everything in between! Children are naturally blessed with grit and resilience but they might lack direction and coping skills which is why therapy helps. I work with children to prepare themselves to face the world and embrace the everyday challanges without losing themselves. I help children to identify their passion and interests that could be positively used to shape their lives. I work with children in anxiety and relational trauma in children and teach them coping skills to manage their emotions.

Children can be impacted by transitions and traumas in their lives. When they don’t know how to cope, the stress can build up. I provide safe and compassionate counselling where the child can talk about their feelings without the fear of being judged, better understand why they feel this way and learn strategies to move forward. I work virtually and in-person with children and adolescents. Parents have told me that their children are more emotionally regulated and, overall, happier, as a result of therapy. I offer in-person therapy in Orangeville (Mondays) and Inglewood (Fridays and Sundays).
