My approach to couples work is rooted in Attachment Theory and draws heavily on the work of Sue Johnson’s Emotion Focused Therapy. After years of working with couples who are stuck in conflict, I agree with Sue Johnson that it is the painful patterns or dance that couples get stuck in that is the key to resolution. For me, helping couples understand and identify the larger patterns rather than getting mired in detail, is hugely satisfying because it helps empower them to recognize, in the moment, what is happening and to make different choices.

Couples counselling focuses on developing strong communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, forgiveness, and effective dialogue. Many couples experience frustration at some point in their relationship where they feel they are not heard, valued or even loved any more. A toxic cycle of blaming, fighting and pulling away begins to form, creating distance and fatigue. For others an affair has shaken the very core of the safety and love they once felt in their relationship. We also understand couples often need support in identifying the deeper meaning or deeper assessment of the concerns. We offer an individualized approach to each couple and family. We utilize Gottman, Systemic Family Therapy and other dignity informed approaches.

I offer Gottman Method Couples Therapy which is an evidence-based practice derived from decades of collected data with effective tools for couples to address areas of weakness and strengths within the relationship. This will entail a rigorous assessment process to determine treatment plan. I will be guiding the couples throughout the session and will be supporting couples coping tools during sessions.
