El Sobrante, translated as “leftover”, or “surplus” has around 12,000 residents and is located in Contra Costa County, California.  As early as 5,000 B.C., the Huichium tribe, which is a sub-tribe of the Ohlone tribe, settled in the East Bay, naming this area El Sobrante.  There is a shell mound near San Pablo Creek that the Huichiun left.  It was in the 1770s that the tribe was forced to convert to Christianity by the Spanish missionaries, dying in large numbers.  In 1841 the land was granted to Juan Jose and Victor Castro.  The boundaries were complicated, with the city being the leftover area that was granted, but with the dispute over the boundaries, a lot of the land was sold to pay for legal fees, with this area remaining and Victor Castro building an adobe dwelling on Castro Ranch Road.  Several schools help make up the local education system for children, including Olinda Elementary and Crespi Junior High School. El Sobrante has a diverse economy, with the largest employers being Color Spot Nurseries, Bookside Hopsital, Chevron, Bio-Rad Laboratories, and Contra Costa Community College.  Because of its location in the Bay Area, it is easily accessible by ground or air.  There are several parks, a community center and a public library as well. ¹
