The city of Fremont has an impressive collection of parks to choose from.  One notable one is Quarry Lake.  A swimming area in the complex features a sandy beach, vending machines, lifeguards and a bathhouse.  There is a small fee to gain entry to the facility and swimming is available from April until October.  People over the age of 16 with valid California fishing licenses can fish at the park in either Rainbow Lake or Horseshoe Lake.  Anglers will also need a daily fishing access permit which is available on the park grounds.  Trout and catfish are stocked in the park’s lakes.  Other water activities allowed include kayaking, canoeing and sailboards.  Any electric-powered boat under 17 feet is acceptable on the waterways.  Families can also pay a small fee to have their four-legged family members join in the fun. Dogs must remain leashed due to the protection of wildlife and ecosystem.

For history buffs, the town offers several historical sites to explore.  The Patterson house is located on the Ardenwood Historical Farm which is over 200 acres.  The elaborate mansion is a fine example of Victorian architecture.  Visitors can tour the property and see how people cooked and farmed previously.  Meeting the farm animals and seeing the staff in period Victorian costumes is always a big hit.  May 29, 1909 was a monumental day in the town as the first steam-powered locomotive pulled into the Centerville Depot.  Rail service was vital to the region and in addition to transporting customers, trains from the depot carried local milk and cream to San Jose and San Francisco during the early 20th century.  As rail service declined in popularity, the depot was retired by Southern Pacific in 1961.  After years of neglect, the depot was restored and today is a gleaming reminder of the area’s past. 1
