I believe that counselling is a useful and valuable tool to tackle the problems that you may encounter in life. You may be a competent, healthy person who has recently experienced a life stressor at home or at work, or you may be faced with a major decision. Perhaps you have a personal or professional goal that you are working towards. These are valid concerns to bring to therapy. Counselling can be a vehicle for a new perspective, taking action, or healing, depending on what you need. The experience can give you an opportunity to learn new skills and make lasting changes in your life.
I have over 10 years of experience as a psychologist, and have worked in academic settings and in private practice. I have provided consulting and counselling services to several independent schools in the Calgary area, and I have contracted my services to private organizations to work with adult clients.
When I meet with adults, we discuss the concerns, and set goals together, based on the presenting issues. After that, we may need to discuss the issue further to really gain some understanding. Often we need to address the thinking patterns that give rise to your actions, so that you can develop some new thought patterns and change your behavior. We may need to problem solve, or develop some new coping strategies, communication skills, or behaviors. Knowing what to do instead is as important as knowing what not to do.
When I meet with minors, I like to involve parents in some way. For therapy to be effective, we need to work together to reinforce what is learned. I like to meet with at least one parent in the room for the beginning of the first session, and sometimes the parent remains for the entire meeting. We may have subsequent joint sessions, as needed, or I may ask a parent to join us for part of a session to discuss a specific issue. Often, I meet with a parent at the beginning or end of a session for an update, or to discuss a parenting concern. Parents also have the option of booking a meeting with me, and on occasion, I may request a parent meeting.
My aim is to provide a safe and welcoming environment where my clients can feel free to be open and honest about their hopes and their struggles. I enjoy collaborating with others to help them to achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals. My approach is practical, yet personable. I care about each person, and I want you to achieve your desired outcome. I look forward to the possibility of meeting with you.
