Depression is far more common than has been generally thought. Folks find themselves feeling hopeless, unable to concentrate, lacking initiative, having difficulty making decisions, trouble sleeping etc. Depression involves a slowing down of the entire human organism as well as lowered self-esteem. Often our dreams and images can lead us to discover the deeper meaning of the depression. Therefore sometimes depression can be a pathway to self-discovery. As we explore how you feel, I listen in a way that provides the client with clarity, offer guidance without imposing decisions, accept the client as they are, without making judgments, as they move forward in achieving

Depression Sucks! I mean this literally. It sucks the energy, motivation, and pleasure right out of your life. If you are suffering with depression, it is easy to fall into a negative feedback loop that perpetuates the depression. In treatment we will break this loop and get you into a positive feedback loop, so that you can begin to feel better. At first it can feel like trying to push a rock up a hill, but your therapist will support you until you are able to take small steps to feel better.

Depression Therapist

Bruce Levine, Ph.D., ABPP

Depression often results following some type of loss. However, often it is not the loss itself that causes the depression, but the person's assessment and thoughts about the loss that produces feelings of depression. Cognitive therapy, as practiced by Dr. Levine, can help reverse such clinical depression. It is normal to feel sadness following a loss or unexpected negative life event and cognitive therapy is frequently an excellent method for insuring that normal sadness does not morph into clinical depression. If medication might help in addition to therapy, Dr. Levine will help direct you to a competent psychopharmacologist to provide this additional assistance, if you choose.

When treating depression, I employ cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) therapy which is empirically validated in research studies to help people with depression. By modifying routines and behavior and learning how to challenge dysfunctional thoughts, clients are helped to improve mood in a relatively short time. This approach is collaborative, active, and supportive. Clients are usually asked to keep records, complete worksheets, test new behaviors, run experiments, and report back on the outcome.

In treating mood problems, the most important piece in collaborating is to find rays of hope in your life. What did you love to do before that you no longer enjoy? What are/were your interests in life? Who are the people in your life you want to feel closer to? What are your strengths? How can we interupt habitual feelings of hopelessnes, by changing the way you think about triggers that lead you to depressed feelings? How can we challenge negative or unrealistic thinking? With sensitive, open communication in sessins, we can find answers to these questions that can curtail habitual depressive thought and feelings. Coping skills can be taught and mastered.

Depression can be debilitating and seldom goes away by itself. It is often a result of built-up feelings of hurt and anger that have not been expressed outwardly or have turned toward the self. It is unfortunate that many people go through their lives experiencing depression when something can be done about it. When depressed, because we feel lethargic and lack energy, it is often accompanied by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness - a feeling that one can never escape it. There is hope however, and together we can help get the joy that life has been missing back. Feel free to call my office for a free 15 minute telephone consultation at 800-474-1445.

If the people in your life haven't ever experienced depression (which is different than being depressed), they can't understand why you can't get over it, move on with your life, or do the things that you used to do. Some people even get into "cheerleading" (c'mon-- you can do it!). That's why I work to understand your depression and help you to manage the feelings of helplessness, despair, and frustration related to depression--little by little, day by day, you might start to get better under my care as I would do my best to understand what you're going through.
