In his work with Level 3 foster children and his subsequent work with a prison population, Dan encountered and worked with persons struggling with much drug and alcohol addiction. In working with this population, Dan quickly became an advocate of dual diagnosis - as he found that, invariably, the client was struggling with another (or other) serious psychological problems, which led to the substance abuse as a way of dealing with the pain. To successfully treat the addictive behaviour requires also treating the concurrent issues.

“It was a long and heavy day and I just need to break the edge.” “I communicate better after few drinks” “I can’t fall asleep if I don’t have my…” When a substance becomes a “priority”, or becomes overused, it begins to creep into and destroy an individual’s health, family, relationship and even work. The question becomes "Do I have control over it or does it have control over me?". Often substances are used as coping mechanism without realizing that it often creates even more anxiety and depression, leaving a person feeling more stress and low down the road. Feeling anxious without a "quick fix" or a “temporary Band-Aid” is a strong indicator that a person is or has lost control with the desired substance. In counselling, we work to support...(view profile to read more)

Addiction is the symptom of the core issue. People who suffer with addiction often feel out of control, fractured, chaotic, and suffer guilt, shame, embarrassment, anger, and mental health issues. They often miss work or have relationship breakdowns. I work with people from a completely non-judgemental basis. Treating the whole person is essential to attaining a long lasting healthy life.

Registered Social Worker

I have been working in the addiction field for many years now and recognize that there is a common theme underlying addictive behavior, whether it be substances or activities. The alcoholic and the workaholic both face the prospect of dying prematurely and alone, but society views one with scorn and one with admiration. Many people are reluctant to seek help for addictive behavior because they know someone else "has it worse". Don't let other people convince you that your problem isn't a big deal. If it matters to you, then it's worth talking about. I come from a place of compassion, non-judgment, and empathy, three ingredients missing in the lives of many people who struggle with addiction.

Addiction is a symptom and often a way of coping with trauma, developmental trauma or other metal health issues. I use a compassionate inquiry lens to help you understand why your addictive behaviour makes sense. I use motivational interviewing, and draw on the wisdom of 12 step models and SMART and REFUGE recovery. I will work with you to help you understand the consequences of your addiction and help you build a life of meaning and purpose where the compulsive need to use disappears. It is not as simple as just stopping the substance or the behaviour. I will help you find healthy ways of coping and dealing with the shame and secrecy of addiction and help you carve a path towards freedom.

Addiction can be complicated and there can be many layers of struggle. My approach is to understand where a person has come from in order to understand what has brought them to counselling today. I am informed by the Response Based Approach, Narrative Therapy, and Systemic Family Therapy. It is important to work together in a way that protects the client's dignity and worth. Goals and treatment are negotiated with clients and are collaborative.

I consider myself an expert in addiction therapy. My focus is not the addictive substance or activity. I focus on the root cause for why you engage in the various activities for the purpose of self-medication. As we flesh out the emotional and traumatic scars from past life events, you will find that your desire to self-medicate reduces significantly.
