A quiet and peaceful city of streets lined with trees, Menlo Park is located between Oakland and San Francisco on the west coast of California. A short distance from the coast of the Pacific Ocean and beautiful State Route 1, this city has proven itself to be an excellent place to live and do business. The famous Santa Cruz Avenue runs through the town, and its origins date back to a pair of Irish settlers in the 1850s. An historic landmark for Menlo Park is the Caltrain Station, a remnant of the old San Jose Rail Road, which was the central part of the growth of the city for much of the late 19th and early 20th century. Today, the Chamber of Commerce is a frequent user of the station, though part of the original building still stands.1

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Menlo Park

Menlo Park is a beautiful city that has a lot of great factors. There are many married couples living in this area, with fulfilling and satisfying relationships with their spouses. It is a community filled with the upper-middle class and wealthy families. Less than 7% of the population falls below the poverty threshold, which is better the national average.2 The area is also well educated and almost 70% of the population in this city holds at least a bachelor's degree, although many have continued their college educations past this point.3

This area is home to thousands of war veterans who have actively served their country overseas. Many of these veterans have paid the price with their minds and have struggled to maintain healthy living once they are discharged from the service. Because of anxiety, depression, and in particular, posttraumatic stress disorder, many veterans face difficulties at work, in the home, and with relationships.4 Veterans can have a very difficult time in marriages, and their spouses are sure to suffer as well. With situations like these, it can be hard for a couple to know where to turn, and many of them end up getting a divorce.

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Menlo Park area is a very expensive place to live. And while the poverty rate is very low, families that do fall into poverty can face many challenges to living comfortably. Peninsula Family Service offers many programs and services that seek to help poor and working poor families improve their functioning. Career assistance programs help residents conduct job searches and prepare for interviews. Child development services provide children of all ages with academic resources to help close the achievement gap. Senior services are available as well, which provide older adults with peer counseling and transitional care programs. To inquire about further details, call 650-403-4300.5
