Palo Alto has gone through many different hands of ownership throughout its history. Mexican nationals held it for a time. However, the outcome of the Mexican-American War, which ended in 1848, passed the land to the U.S. and provided land grants for American settlers and tycoons. Fortunately for some of the Mexican landowners, they were able to hold onto the land as many of the settlers and tycoons opted to settle in San Francisco because Palo Alto had low creek levels. The Spanish names that are still present in Palo Alto represent the local heritage of the former residents. Stanford University was named after Leland Stanford who founded the college back in 1887. Stanford also made the university an alcohol-free school.1

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Palo Alto

For many couples and families in Palo Alto, domestic violence is an unfortunate reality. Over 10 percent of adults in Santa Clara County have experienced abuse by an intimate partner at some point. And while that rate is far lower than the state average, it is still a significant problem. Another common issue that couples face is stress. Money, health, work, and intimate issues can all cause significant stress that in turn diminishes the quality of the relationship.2

Couples and families in need of a range of support services can find help they need at the Salvation Army. Corps Community Centers throughout the Bay Area offer emergency services to those who have experienced domestic abuse or violence. Christian education and character building programs are also provided for couples who seek spiritual guidance in their relationship. For those with families, food and nutrition programs are available, so families have nutritious meals to maintain good physical and mental health. Many other outreach and support services are available. For more information, call the Redwood City office at 650-368-4643.3
