I take a brain-based approach to depression to help you learn to rewire your brain away from the negative and to learn to build more on the positive side of things. We dig deep to try to find the different areas of your life that you do have control over. Depression often signals a system that’s gone into protective shutdown. I approach it with curiosity, using body and mindfulness-based practices to gently awaken your nervous system and bring you safely and comfortably back into the driver's seat of your life. By tuning into what your system has been trying to protect you from, we create room for motivation, pleasure, and connection to return naturally, rather than forcing positivity.

We can use mindfulness techniques to work with difficult emotions or a lack of emotions day to day. Exercise, diet, sleep and many daily activities can be utilized to help with difficult times. Self care is an exploration. I support the use of medications when needed depending on what you want to do. I take an individualized approach so the process depends on how you want to approach it and what your needs are.

Depression may show up in a variety of different ways for you; you may notice that you are feeling deeply sad, lonely, and alone. You may also be noticing that you are lacking in energy, inspiration, and motivation. Depression or overwhelming feelings of sadness and despair are often clues that something deeper is going on within your psyche and within your body. More often than not there is a reason for your depression, even when you are not consciously aware of it. Your body doesn't speak in words, the way your mind does, rather it communicates with you through your feelings, sensations, and emotions. Often ignoring your emotions can intensify your feelings of depression.

When working with depression, I use a combination of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), talk therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) when working with adults and teens and play therapy when working with children. If there is a clinical depression diagnosis, Neurofeedback or consulting a doctor about medication options may also be recommended as a part of the treatment process.
