Anger is one of the healthy and normal emotions. What can cause problems is unhealthy expression of anger. Clients benefit from working on strategies for managing the triggers that lead to reactive outbursts of anger. The next step is to find healthy outlets for this anger- and there are many. Anger can be a cover for other feelings. Benefit is achieved from working on these underlying feelings and expressing them in healthy ways, within the safe compassionate space provided by the therapist. Reactive patterns have been learned in our early years. It is not helpful to judge them. It takes practice to learn new ways of handling anger.

Anger is often thought of as a negative emotion, but I like to think of Anger as the part of you that loves you and wants to stand up for you when you’ve experienced something “unfair.” Anger does not always make the best decisions about when to stand up for you, so I work collaboratively with clients to identify and explore how anger shows up in their lives, and to strengthen and develop strategies to minimize the impact it has on living the life you want to live. Anger, frustration, rage, and reactivity overall, can make a person feel frustrated and powerless; when we have emotional outbursts of any kind they can feel so all-encompassing and make us feel like we are not in control of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. In working with clients on their emotions I aim to primarily promote an understanding of why our emotional outbursts occur; once this has been established we begin to work on how to manage, mitigate, or change how these outbursts occur, or why we feel the way that we feel in the first place.

Anger is the most common coping mechanism that is often misunderstood. Suppressing or avoiding anxiety inevitably leads to being overwhelmed and sometimes emotionally exploding. Instead of suppressing anger, a person should learn how to embrace it, be curious about it, feel it, understand it, and eventually channel it in a healthy and constructive manner. Anger comes from a sense of being misunderstood, ignored or left unsupported and the therapy should acknowledge and explore these areas. Anger is a normal and healthy emotion and we all get angry from time to time. However, when anger turns destructive and/or self-destructive and brings problems into your personal and professional life, you need to seek support to learn how to manage your anger better. In the process, you will learn how to relieve the symptoms and recognize the signs of anger, increase your confidence and self esteem level, enjoy stronger and healthier relationships with your loved ones and coworkers, learn how to express yourself and your emotions with confidence and without anger, and live more balanced life both mentally and emotionally.

Nobody wants to be angry and upset themselves or others. Anger is sometimes about current issues that need to be resolved through a good action plan. Other times it is due to deeper issues that need to be worked through. Anger is often a symptom of previous upsets or issues in our lives that caused us pain in some way. We will process those upsets through discussion and unique exercises created for you as homework or to be completed in session until they are worked through.
