Residences, businesses and any other group can participate. Just fill out a form to nominate your favorite garden display. For something more fitness-oriented, Squash tournaments and beginners programs are also available.1 Learn to play and compete in this exciting sport while you get to know your fellow Clarington residents. Water based programs are also provided for participants of all ages.  The preschool program offers classes for ages 4 months to 5 years. Each is broken into fun groups that focus on a specific aspect of swimming, from glides and kicks to independent swimming. Hopeful lifeguards or those with a concern for safety can sign up for Lifesaving and First Aid classes. A winter swim schedule is also provided to encourage residents to stay fit even during the snowy months.

Mental Health in Clarington

The municipality of Clarington is located in Ontario, and has a total of 84,548 people living there, at the latest census count. It is over 600 square kilometers in size, making it a very large area with a low population density´┐Żless than 150 people live in every square kilometer of land. Because of the progress that has been made by the municipality, more people have started moving here, and the population saw an increase of over 8%. Things are looking up for this area and many things have already started to improve.

One problem that has yet to be solved, however, is the mental health concern. Recently 9% of the population was reported to have been hospitalized for mental illnesses such as depression, attempted suicide, schizophrenia, anxiety, or other such problems. These are pretty high rates, and many of mental patients had to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days, for similar problems.2 There are many different options and treatment opportunities for people who are suffering from mental illness. One great example is the COPE Mental Health program´┐Żthey offer rehabilitation and counseling for people who have mental illnesses and are unable to find help elsewhere. Their phone number is 905-623-4123 and they are open from 8:30 to 4:30 on weekdays.3

Current Initiatives

Clarington has seen many changes lately, and the area continues to progress. There are many plans currently in action, or that will be put in action in upcoming years, that are designed to make the entire area better. One of these is the Port Granby Project which is a plan to save the environment and manage radioactive materials, to maintain the historically low rates.4 This will lead to better health among the citizens, a safer environment to raise children, and a beautiful place to live for years to come.
