Depression often comes as a result of not feeling entitled to claim our life and set boundaries to create safety in our life. Instead of feelings like we can grow and become more of who we are, we get caught in the reverse, where we feel more and more that we should shrink and lose our aliveness. I will work with you in a process of recognizing your feelings and getting them to work for you rather than against you. Depression is about dis-empowerment, but we become empowered when we can make sense of our inner world and use our feelings to strengthen ourselves and make the changes we need to make in our life. No need to go it alone, let me guide you through this challenging terrain!

My approach to working with a client struggling with depression is to use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. We want to challenge the individuals thoughts and behaviours and replace them with a more positive outlook. Self-talk is a technique that works well with replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts. As well, setting small step-by-step goals is key to achieving success. Each goal should be achievable and tangible. The atmosphere for this therapy needs to be supportive, compassionate and goal oriented.

Mindfulness-based therapy and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are the primary approaches I use with clients to provide tools and skills for managing and reducing depression. For clients experiencing depression, it is important to realize that most feelings of depression are the result of, in some, reliving the pain from the past. If you are experiencing depression, your therapy will include learning to recognize the those mental and emotional places where you are 'stuck' in the pain from the past, and learn to release it. If you are on anti-depressants, therapy will also assist in managing your depression.

The difference between depression and pain is often misunderstood. We get stuck in a process that should come to a natural completion. We get stuck because our environment does not encourage us to respect our feelings, to honour our process and to discover our own way to live. I believe no one would suffer depression if they could express themselves fully and be heard. Therapy can teach you how to receive this respect, then you naturally begin to give yourself the compassion and understanding you need to allow your process to reach completion. To remember or rediscover emotions, from laughter to anger to tears; To allow flow to replace the fear that fed the depression and hopelessness.

At Home or Private Discreet Intensives

Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. Instead, why not try a natural and arguably more effective way to not just change your mind, but change the brain--where the depression is rooted. Contact us at kevin@kevinflemingphd.com.

Depression is typically an outcome of a current or past life event, or both. It might be due to grief or a recent disappointment. Depending on what we explore together to be the cause, we will work with action plans and strategies to set your life area in the direction that you want to improve. Further, if there are issues from your past, which is frequently the case, we will identify these upsets, identify schemas that you have formulated that impact how you think, feel, and behave, and we will work to improve your mood. Further, we may work through various worksheets and processes to understand what your thoughts and behaviors are and how these are helping or hurting your mood.

Depression can often feel unmanageable for those who are suffering. Depressed feelings can be caused by a number of things, and what we're able to do to ease those feelings can vary. I help clients not only address the specific painful situations in their lives, but also encourage healthy lifestyle options for my clients, which are often underlying contributors to our moods.
