Stress is a fact of life. Work, school, finances, relationships, raising children, concerns about the future, and countless other issues can be overwhelming. We simply cannot handle long-term, chronic stress without health consequences. Anxiety goes hand-in-glove with stress. Stress can lead to feelings of anxiety, and anxiety often heightens stress levels. This feedback loop can feel crazy-making, overwhelming, and get in the way of everything. In my practice, I help people to better understand stress and anxiety, and learn ways to deepen their ability to cope, and move toward enjoying increased peace of mind and sense of stability. Contact me for a free 30-minute consultation to discuss how we can work together toward getting you feeling like you are more in control of your life.

Anxiety is very common within our society and as such also one of the most common reasons that clients come for counselling. I integrate grounding and breathing exercises along with Cognitive behaviour therapy in my treatment of anxiety. It can also be helpful to consider sensorimotor (body) symptoms that the client is experiencing, I have training in sensorimotor psychotherapy and take a trauma informed approach to treating anxiety and depression.

While most treatment approaches for anxiety and stress are effective on the surface, they dont treat the real problem. Mantras, deep breathing, and rational dialogues about your fear being irrational rarely work---for most people dont believe it or you!. Imagine if you can trick the brain into changing without you telling your conscious mind that you are changing it? Problem with anxiety and stress is that the brain in this state knows you want to change it and it resists. In working with anxiety and stress we will talk about the larger 'problem' and think of different ways of framing or addressing it. This will occur over several sessions. In each session however we will introduce or practice a technique that the client can use to manage the symptoms of anxiety. Some of the techniques are visual, but I also usually do 5 minutes of meditation or breathing exercises. I used to live in India and credit my yoga instructors there for the breathing exercises I have learned to cope with anxiety. I always ask clients at the end of the session what their 'take-away' is, and we collaborate on a short and long term plan moving forward.

Stress and anxiety often present as somatic distress, physical tension, racing thoughts, and sometimes, they come as a sense of constant pressure and overwhelm that interfere with our daily life in varying degrees of intensity. We can work together to slow down the internal races, identify the sources of distress, work on grounding techniques and integrate mindful, cognitive strategies into your day to day routine to give you more control. The goal is not to eradicate stress because it is natural to experience anxiety and stress, however, we want to keep it within the optimal window of tolerance.

Anxiety is a major issue that needs to be addressed and properly maintained to achieve balance in life. Interesting to learn is that there is such a thing as positive anxiety: "eustress". Eustress is the perfect amount of anxiety to keep one attentive, alert, and performing well. "Distress" on the other hand, will create a shut-down or dysfunction in behaviour. Critical to understand is that negative messages we send ourselves ('Cognitive Distortions') significantly contribute to distress. Anxiety is real and it can be overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be.
