Each clients’ experience is unique and deserves to be honored and respected. As much as we may wish to forget or disregard some early life experiences, they may still influence our decisions and behaviors as adults. We often make choices in the present based on past adaptive early learning strategies, without recognizing that our situations have changed. What was once an adaptive coping strategy can become maladaptive in a different environment. In most cases, we are not aware of these subtle influences or patterns that develop and can negatively influence our relationships, our functioning in daily life, or our ability to cope with life’s stressors. Helping clients understand these patterns and develop new healthier coping strategies is at the foundation of our interventions.

I am passionate about helping clients identify and resolve the negative influence of past trauma or PTSD. Survival responses of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn can develop after a single traumatic event or after prolonged exposure to adverse environments. The imprint of these past events on our nervous systems can have a strong influence on our present relationships. Our ability to recognize our emotions and have our needs met by significant others can become impaired because of past traumatic experiences. This can often lead to symptoms of depression, anxiety, or the use of unhealthy coping strategies that may ultimately cause us more problems. Recognizing these influences, and deprogramming them, allows the individual to heal and move forward in confidence with new healthy strategies.

After retiring from running my own business, I fulfilled a promise to myself to return to school and become a psychotherapist. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My life experiences, along with my professional training, and on-going passion for continuing education, ensure the latest research-based interventions and strategies for my clients. Competency is important to me, so I am always updating my skills and adding new certifications to better help my clients. As a trauma informed professional, I offer the following interventions:

  • EMDR - Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing
  • CBT - Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • DBT - Dialectical Behavior Therapy
  • IFS - Internal Family System Theory
  • CCTP-II - Certified Clinical Trauma Professional - Level II
  • Narrative Sand Tray Therapy
  • The Gottman Method - for couples therapy
  • C-PD - Certification in Personality Disorders

In our busy world it is very difficult to slow down long enough to find our balance. Sometimes our body and our mind need to get our attention by letting us know something is not right and force us to take the time we need to re-establish our balance.  This is a natural and normal way for us to recognize things are "off". Life can overwhelm all of our existing coping skills and leave us struggling. This just provides you the opportunity to learn some new skills and strategies to take into the future!
