During the COVID-19 crisis I will be offering telecounselling and secure online video counselling support to clients in need.  Please contact me directly to discuss your preferred method of communication and how these services may differ from face to face counselling support.

David Small offers a therapeutic approach that embraces compassion for client problems while promoting the need for change.  David has been a Registered Psychologist in Alberta since 2012 and since that time he has gained valuable counselling experience working in diverse settings that include general counselling facilities, a collaborative mental health care center, the University of Calgary and the Calgary Board of Education.  David has taken his passion for mental health into private practice as of February, 2020.

Therapy with David has many benefits which include: overcoming depression and anxiety, improving communication with your partner, assistance with major life changes or transitions, gender affirming support, improving self-esteem, dealing with conflict, creating safety for your teen while they navigate adolescent challenges and parenting tools that improve relationships and help to manage challenging behaviour.

Therapy can be a challenging yet rewarding journey.   David believes that the majority of life stressors fall into three categories that include relationship difficulties, internal factors (uncomfortable, unhelpful or harmful thoughts and feelings) and difficult life events (past and present). Depression and anxiety often occur when these factors are left unchecked.  He uses cognitive-behavioural and solution-focused therapy to help his clients develop manageable goals and to track progress over time.  David believes strongly in the importance of a trusting therapeutic alliance.  He regularly seeks client feedback about the quality of the counselling relationship, the benefit of goals and the relevance of each session agenda in order to make any course corrections during therapy.  Each client has the capacity for change and the evidenced based strategies David uses in his practice are an effective way to help overcome a client's barriers to success.

David has a Master of Arts degree in Psychology from City University of Seattle.  He has specialized training in the management of depression and anxiety, relationship concerns, stress management, self-esteem, teen issues, gender diverse counselling, grief/loss and parenting difficulties.

David charges a flat rate fee of $200 per 60 minute session.  This fee applies to couples and individuals.  He also provides a receipt that can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement.  It can be helpful to know the amount of insurance coverage you may have in order to plan treatment accordingly.  You can find out this information by contacting your insurer.

David's office is located at Unit 10A, 109 Stockton Point in Okotoks, AB.  He has furnished his office space with comfort in mind to promote a welcoming and relaxing environment for his clients.  Phone number is 1-403-803-4508.
