What is EMDR Therapy?:

EMDR Therapy is an evidence-based therapy for treating trauma, negative life experiences, childhood neglect and attachment issues, and psychological stress. EMDR therapy allows people to process events that have become "stuck in time" which lead to symptoms in the "here and now" (i.e. the present). The symptoms a person experiences now are often the result of past experiences that have not been processed or integrated adequately in the brain. Thus, we continue to re-experience symptoms related to past events that are triggered in the present. EMDR seems to unlock memories of past distressing events so that normal information processing is resumed and the person no longer relives the images, sensory experiences (sounds, smells, sights, etc), emotions, and negative self-beliefs (e.g. I am unlovable, I'm unworthy, I'm not safe) associated with the distressing event. The memory becomes less disturbing and current symptoms decrease so that you are better able to function and cope in the present.
What is CBT?:
CBT is a commonly used, evidence-based therapy that helps people to understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are intertwined. You learn to understand how thoughts affect how you feel (emotions and body sensations) and what you do (behaviour). As humans, we assign meaning to our experiences, however, the meaning we assign to a thought or situation may not be helpful or accurate. Through CBT you learn to become aware of negative thought patterns and how to challenge them. As a result, intolerable emotions, such as depressed mood and anxiety, can be reduced.
What is Equine Assisted Therapy?:
Equine assisted therapy is a powerful, holistic and effective approach to healing, where horses are integral team members. Horses are sensitive to non-verbal cues so they provide us with immediate feedback, mirroring our experience, feelings, and behaviours. We incorporate an EAGALA model with evidence-based therapies such as, EMDR and CBT. This provides clients with a unique experience that they cannot get anywhere else. Through ground experiences with horses (no riding), clients become more aware of what's going on inside themselves and learn to regulate their own energy. We work with the window of tolerance to teach clients how to recognize when they are outside their window of tolerance and how to get back in their 'window' (i.e. when they can handle what they are feeling, thinking, and their somatic sensations). Through working with horses we learn what is going on inside ourselves. It is amazing what can happen when you connect with a horse! We partner with a farm just outside of Winnipeg. They have approximately 20 rescued horses from miniature, to ponies, to full-sized horses. Thus, we can match a client with the right horses, depending on their unique needs.
Fees for therapy and assessment services:
Fees range from $125 to $200 per 50-minute session depending on the professional you see in our office.
