For some, impulse control may be extremely difficult, seemingly unreachable. There is a solution however, which I have found to be very effective in therapy. I like to first provide my client with the tools to control the anger outburst by removing him/herself from the situation. This is extremely important because in that stage of flooded emotion, the person cannot think logically or rationally. No one can. Secondly, and most importantly, underneath the anger lies many other emotions, and in most cases, the source emotion is fear. I help my clients peel back these layers and identify all the emotions that are attached to the anger; be it guilt, sadness, insecurities, shame, or fear.
