We provide therapy to treat anger management. Anger is a psychological defense mechanism to feeling threatened either emotionally or physically. We teach our clients how to identify their own feelings, so they are better able to communicate the offensive behavior or words which they heard. Then we teach the client how to respectfully express themselves.

When I work with those who are struggling with anger issues, I believe it is important to address the root of the anger, as well as develop constructive coping skills that you can draw on in the moment. In therapy, we can identify triggers that will help you anticipate and better prepare for your feelings. It is important for you to find healthy outlets for this energy as well as gain awareness into how others are impacted by your reactions.

Through my numerous years of experience with working clients with anger issues, the core element is hurt and and disappointment. Some people have difficulty saying that they are hurt and instead lash oout or react in unhealthy behaviors. I have worked with clients that have either damaged their relationships and or hurt themselves in the process. Training and implementing instruction to clients in order to manage anger through court appointed measures or simply clients who desire a change in thought and behavior can be achieved simply by coaching with cognitive behavioral therapy.

If you and your partner are feeling emotionally disconnected, you may find yourself drawn into repeated arguments with each other about seemingly unrelated issues -- such as money, parenting, chores, and sex. Hiding within these disagreements are painful questions: Can I reach you? Do I matter to you? Can I count on you if I need you? Once these deep, hidden questions are calmed, and you both feel safe and loved, you and your partner will find it much easier to resolve other issues.

I have worked with clients who have had a difficult relationship with anger throughout their lives and have found that it is often accompanied by shame, blame, judgement, or guilt. These problems have a powerful voice that works to drown out a person's preferences and unique outcomes, placing them far into the background, and deeming them unimportant. It is remarkable to find out what values clients have managed to hold onto despite anger's seemingly all consuming presence. The excavation of moments of holding onto values in the face of adversity is an opportunity to approach anger from a place of agency and empowerment versus blame or shame.

Anger when used appropriately can be a useful tool to give us the aggressive energy we need to take action when we are feeling helpless or victimized. Unfortunately, it is often misused and becomes abusive, creating whole new problems for relationships and careers. I work with clients to first learn to control their emotional expressions, define the underlying feelings creating the hostility, and learn new skills to better utilize their feelings to resolve conflict in more adult ways.

Anger is a problem when it is too intense, frequent, lasts too long, or impacts relationships at work or home. Drawing from anger research, an understanding of emotions, and years of working with court-referred angry people, we've created a respectful and effective series of anger management courses designed to help clients understand the roots of their anger. Clients will identify toxic and useful forms of anger, disrupt long-established patterns of escalation, deal with wounds and resentments from the past, replace aggressiveness with assertiveness, overcome feelings of shame, and gain confidence in newly acquired skills that work. Change is possible!

Activating the fight-flight system is the single most challenging factor in managing anger, stress, & interpersonal conflict. When anger stems from childhood trauma, EMDR may be useful. When it originates from an over-active limbic system (e.g, in ADD), neurofeedback and/or medication may be indicated. Regardless of the source, some crucial elements are: learning an effective relaxation/self-soothing method, knowing how to check one's pulse so that time-out can be taken to use the self-soothing tools to calm down when elevating (rather than after full escalation), and employing a cardio exercise program. A good Mindfulness practice can be beneficial as well for those who are so inclined.

I have found that formal anger management classes provide excellent tools, but that most of those tools go out the window when emotionally provoking events occur. I help people work out the underlying feelings that trigger anger that has been out of control. But I also help people use their anger effectively. Many persons are angry and are not aware of it and they could effectively utilize their anger towards constructive ends. Anger is merely a signal that something is wrong, etc. Thus, the anger is not the problem, it is what you do with it. I will help you "manage" your signals of anger in more effective ways through each phase of the process.

Most people affected by problem anger spend their time trying to control it and make promises to themselves and others about not getting angry again. Instead of struggling to control anger, there is a way to learn how to accept and observe angry feelings without having to act out in anger. Problem anger is usually a message that something needs to be changed or be released. I use the concepts of Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Narrative Therapy to help clients let go of anger and move towards their preferred way of acting.

I have helped many clients with anger issues, by helping them to see--and work through--the deep sadness that lies underneath chronic excessive anger. Rage can arise from humiliations, from feeling cheated by others, from shame, and from loss. Whatever the main source, anger can be a less-unpleasant substitute for the helplessness that these experiences bring with them. Clients benefit when they are able to replace the move-into-rage with a sober curiosity about just what is going on inside and outside at that moment.
