Parents bring their young children or adolescents to see me for counselling when they are having severe conflicts with them, when they see that their kids are struggling with school-work or with peer relationships, and when their children are experiencing psychological distress such as anxiety, depression, or difficulty adjusting to change. In all my work, I include the parents as partners in the treatment process.

As an adult therapist, I help parents cope w family issues. Patterns of disfunction are often unconsciously repeated. Whether you’re dealing with behavioral issues, common childhood problems, or serious attachment issues, it’s important to provide the stability, structure, and care all kids need to feel loved, self-confident, and safe at the same time parents need support with their challenges too!

Couples Therapist, Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist

717 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario M6G 1L5 | please use email or website to connect

If a family connects with me directly due to my past work experience, or if a therapist refers a family to me knowing my history in the field, I do provide limited space for families. Please note that my practice is geared toward couples, and so my spaces for families are limited. I do not work with individual children for full treatment. I offer Emotionally Focused Family Therapy. Quite simply, I need the parents just as much as the child does for effective treatment! I offer connections and work towards corrective emotional experiences within the family. This actually goes on during the session---and beyond! Please do not hesitate to inquire if you feel I might be a fit for you.

Many times, child therapists overdo the family system in their quest to seek effective solutions for emotional, learning or behavioral concerns with young children. And many times doctors overpathologize issues that shouldn’t be medicated necessarily. This leaves parents wondering what is the best route for their child? Introducing brainwave optimization technology. A fast, effective, natural, and less expensive way to allow your child's brain to make the optimizing changes it desires to make---on its own! Without any external force, opinion, medication, diagnostic, etc. Contact kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or 877-606-6161.

As a therapist, I practice "talk therapy". For children to participate or benefit from counselling or family counselling with me, it requires them to have a level of education and maturity which enables them to understand basic conversation and benefit from talking. Some young children who are shy or not confident in speaking with adults may be better benefited from another therapeutic modality offered by other practitioners such as art therapy or play therapy. That being said I have worked quite effectively with a number of precocious young children who have enjoyed talking with me.

I use various creative commitment strategies to obtain commitment to children therapeutic engagement. For example, I use play therapy activities to engage children in key social-emotional learning areas to help them better support their mental health for life. This includes learning how to effectively manage stress, identifying emotions, emotion regulation, nurturing relationships, planning and problem solving, conflict resolution skills training, following daily routines, mindfulness meditation, staying positive, and feeling good about themselves.

Children’s behaviour is often a reflection of their internal experience. Including parents/caregivers in therapy can provide the opportunity for parents to help their child better understand their emotional experiences, to facilitate helpful communication, and to provide an environment that fosters both security and independence. I work with individuals, couples, children and families. Book a free consultation to explore if we are a good fit for therapy.

Children can often exhibit externalizing or internalizing behaviors when they are unable to express themselves or process/cope with their feelings and emotions. Therapy can be a safe space for children to make sense of their feelings through creative and engaging means. Depending on age, working with young children can entail working with parents on how to best support their child in what they are going through and to give parents a space to reflect on the kind of parent they want to be while expressing concerns or personal challenges they may be experiencing. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to ensure we are a good fit.

Children are precious. However, they do not come with an owner’s manual. Remember the feeling you experienced the first time you brought your baby home? Do you remember the first time you washed their hair? Or even cut their nails? That initial fear you felt, is normal. As parents, we want the best for our offspring. This can be quite fear provoking. Raising resilient children takes practice and support. I work with parents to raise their children. In session, you will learn age appropriate expectations and responsibilities. I offer practical strategies to manage your child’s behaviours.

My approach when working with children under 12 years old is to ensure that they are provided with a positive and safe experience of therapy. I prefer to tailor therapy to their developmental stage by creating a fun environment that may involve play, art, and activities during sessions. Discussions about their interests, skills, and special talents and abilities are at the forefront of our therapeutic conversations to help build confidence and feelings of positivity. My background in relational therapy may invite parents or siblings into sessions as well. Please contact me for a free consultation if you are interested in determining if I would be a good fit for your child/children.
