I use psychotherapy for both long term and short term benefit. During the first session we will set short term achievable goals and over the course of therapy I will encourage you to widen your scope and envision bigger dreams. We will look at past trauma/issues that have created psychological blocks and work on resolving them in order to create healthy change and transformation.

Looking for a longer term approach to working through difficulties? As with counselling, psychotherapy involves a therapist and client working together to develop effective coping mechanisms and improve functionality; unlike counselling, psychotherapists dig deeper, exploring patterns of behaviour that have lead to where a person finds oneself in life.

Registered Psychotherapist/Certified Art Therapist

447 Park St. N, Peterborough, Ontario K9H 4R1 | 705-772-8345

My starting point in any work I do with clients is to build a strong connection between us. This done through listening, respect, creating safety, and really being present with the client when we are together. I believe this is vital to any therapy I do. I provide an atmosphere that the client can feel heard and seen for who they are. Every session may look different because it is based on the clients needs, situation, and goals for therapy.

Dr James Dobson wrote a book called "Emotions Can You Trust Them?" He says after 200 pages "NO YOU CAN'T!". One of the main interventions Marie does in her practice is to encourage and teach clients to challenge their emotions, feelings and thoughts. Is there any validity to your emotions--if there is then address this issue. Many clients will come saying they feel sad or depressed. Marie will ask "is there any reason for you to feel this way?" NO...then thank the thought and tell it to go away. Is there a root to some of these thoughts? Were you told as a child that you were stupid, ugly, no one likes you? This could be the root. Change the root you will change the fruit.

James Hillman once said, "We've had a hundred years of psychotherapy and the world is getting worse." While there are many occasions where the validation and listening endemic to psychotherapy makes sense, there are times where we over assume that "feeling better" and "changing behavior" are the same. Grey Matters International, Inc. goes after the forgotten brain laws to behavior change that therapists miss when processing hours and hours of dialogues with people. Utilizing a cutting edge technology to facilitate the emotional process of change, we can make the therapy process way more effective, faster, and with less money spent. My approach to psychotherapy includes a gentle and safe context in which an individual is interpersonally prized and admired creating an opportunity for the person to safely face and experience their own internal and external conflicts in a way that increases self awareness, self respect and self efficacy resulting in re-balancing of conflicts in a synthesized self, experiencing harmony and synergistic strength.

Psychotherapy will help you understand yourself and your behaviour. By talking to a trained therapist you will gain insight into yourself and awareness of why you do what you do, and ways to change it. Psychotherapy looks at what you think, believe, and feel, and how that affects the way you live your life. By changing how you think, you can change how you believe, and change how you feel.

People often come to therapy to get rid of painful and difficult feelings. Rather than getting rid of our feelings, therapy is a skilled process of helping us understand ourselves so we can use our feelings to navigate our lives. Even the very painful feelings hold vital information for us to become sure-footed in our life. Just like in martial arts, we use the momentum of the attacker and redirect it to ensure our safety ; in therapy we use the information from the painful feelings to clarify what we need to create more safety in our lives so we can thrive. It's a valuable process of allowing our feelings to work for us to create satisfying joyful lives.
