Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is often the modality of choice with issues of anxiety or depression. When the roots of either are found in thought distortions, CBT will be used. At times anxiety and depression might mask deeper concerns such as unmet needs, unspoken pain, frozen anger or other trauma wounds. Family systems, Compassionate Inquiry and CBT are used in these more complex situations.

Anxiety We all experience anxiety in some form in our daily lives — perhaps as a result of a new relationship, a new job, financial struggles, or a move to a new community. It is part of the human experience. However, when anxiety persists and hinders an individual from functioning properly during daily activities, it may be a sign of a deeper problem. Some symptoms of an anxiety disorder include unmanageable apprehension about routine events, bouts of intense anxiety, fear of certain situations, and unwanted thoughts. Panic attacks — short bouts of overpowering anxiety — are another symptom. Panic attacks often cause an increased heart rate, shortness of breath, shaking, chest pain, and sweating. Individuals struggling with anxiety are often also...(view profile to read more)

To begin with, it is helpful to understand anxiety and build awareness over how it affects us both physiologically and psychologically. Anxiety comes in many forms - constant worrying, a sense of loss of control, or the overwhelming feeling that something is going to go wrong. As humans, we all experience some level of anxiety, it's a part of our normal stress response to help motivate us and even keep us safe by thinking ahead to danger. However, when we get stuck in this experience and feel held back, it can be helpful to talk to a therapist. My approach to anxiety starts by helping clients understand their body's unique response to anxiety. This awareness will be the key into understanding triggers, which helps us work together on regulating and coping with anxiety in a way to push you forward.

As a society we tend fear anxiety and stress and make many efforts to avoid or get rid of it. My approach to anxiety and stress is to show you that it does not have to inhibit your functioning – you CAN do things while also being anxious, and you likely already have. Anxiety and stress were once adaptive traits that helped humans survive, and together we can work towards creating a healthier relationship with them, one that does not interfere with your daily life. We will look at your core values, underlying beliefs, and negative thought patterns that might be getting in the way, and work towards a healthier mind and body.

Trauma, stress, and anxiety are usually caused by specific experiences that we have had, or by the lack of feeling of safety in our family, relationship, or at work. I help clients recover from traumatic events and experiences and develop stronger emotional management skills. Often clients have been put on medications that only mask the problems--please do not stop medications without your doctor's approval, and gradual reduction. There are other ways to calm the nervous system, and I am certified in EMDR (a treatment for post traumatic stress disorder), and other therapeutic techniques to help you with this.

Anxiety and stress can impact many aspects of our life. It is important to recognize the root of anxiety and stress in our everyday life and to be able to help our recovery. One of the most effective psychotherapies that we use to treat anxiety is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Depending on the source of anxiety, we also draw on other modalities such as Emotion Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and other approaches. Using these approaches, we help you find your source of anxiety, identify your triggers for anxiety, find your faulty thought patterns and replace them with correct ones, and recognize your unhealthy coping mechanisms and replace them with healthy ones.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective way to help us examine the building blocks of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. We are not irrational beings who behave in random ways; we just operate on belief systems that may not be serving us very well. Understanding why we are how we are offers us the choice to be different. This same approach can help us to understand the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of other important people in our lives as well.

Anxiety is a feeling of dread at its least, or thoughts that lead you to believe you are unsafe and/or about to die at its worst. I offer interventions to this challenge, all of which engage the brain and body. We can take a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach and examine and challenge faulty thinking. We can also use Neurofeedback (NFB) as an approach to calming the central nervous system so the frontal cortex of the brain can engage in logical thinking and keep the brain from having to go to the place of anxiety unnecessarily. Another approach I use, EMDR, helps the brain to reprocess old hurts and or trauma, taking the charge out of the experience.

Heightened stress or anxiety is so common in our society that sometimes we fear that without the adrenaline rushing through our bodies, we would suffer from extreme boredom or worse, fall into a deep, dark depression. Unfortunately, the stress response that protects us in times of extreme danger actually harms us when left to run rampant. Finding safe, healthy ways to ‘self-soothe’ will increase physical health & also free you to enjoy your life more fully. Since we have absolutely no power to control anyone but ourselves & nothing but the present moment, decreasing our ‘stress response’ frees up energy that can be put into significant relationships & activities that bring life to us.
