Anger is an essential emotion. It lets us know what is important. Sometimes, the intensity of anger can be upsetting. Anger management is more about anger awareness. Learning how to manage intense feelings is helpful in both family and work environments. By becoming aware of seemingly insignificant triggers, you can avoid an very significant outburst. Counselling can help you transform anger as the enemy to anger as your ally.

There are many reasons why people get angry. Being able to feel angry is normal and healthy. However, how people respond to anger determines if they are being appropriate or not. Through anger management counselling, I can help you understand the source of your anger, how to respond to anger effectively and appropriately, and how to enjoy your life is such a way that your feelings serve to communicate awareness of your environment versus controlling your thoughts and behaviour. Through counselling you can become "in control" versus being controlling. I can help you to resolve conflict effectively and to express yourself assertively versus passively or aggressively.

Anger typically provides a great deal of energy. Sometimes it can fuel us to stand up and say “no” to unfair treatment. However, it can also translate into aggression that can hurt the ones we love and care about, including ourselves. Therapy can be an opportunity to identify the emotions or reasons underlying the anger so we can better communicate when boundaries have been crossed and needs have not been met. Techniques to soothe oneself, exert energy in a positive way and conflict resolution skills are typical directions for therapy. This may improve your relationships with others and yourself, so you can lead a more contented life.

I tend to be fairly cognitive-behavioural, trying to find as much of a description as I can of the environmental cues and consequences of the anger, as well as the internal determinants, i.e. the thoughts and rationalizations that accompany, precede, or follow from the episodes of anger. I then intervene, in collaboration with the client, accordingly. I will sometimes use hypnotic, relaxation, and imagery techniques to enhance reflection on the anger images, and to enhance counterconditioning of the anger response.

I have worked in a group setting with men who have power and control issues. I believe in safety in families, and compassion for all. The work starts with taking responsibility for our actions and the effects they have on others. I believe people are capable of change and therapy can be an invitation to growth in responsibility, empathy and behaviour change. I would address the emotional root of the problem and help you understand why anger leads to aggression.

Anger management counseling can help to identify stressors and learn the steps to stay calm in the face of anger. The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

Anger is a normal emotion that can sometimes become destructive to our relationships and personal health if not effectively managed. All humans are amenable to anger; men and women alike. When anger gets in the way of our relationships, it becomes necessary to understand the reasons for the emotion and to develop ways to effectively 'place' the emotion where it belongs. I believe that the goal of our collaborative work together is not to figure out ways to "smother" the emotion but gain an understanding of and develop ways to effectively manage it.

Learning to manage your anger and express it in a healthy and positive way is a process. This process, through therapy or counselling, involves becoming self-aware - or learning where the anger really comes from. And also acquiring the skills or tools to express in a way that is healthy and constructive. I have been doing this work for nearly 30 years and is one of my specialty areas.

Anger is probably the most misunderstood emotions and also one of our most valuable tools. Many of us have expereinced anger as abusive, brutal or scary. But don't confuse the feeling of anger with it's expression. The flip side of anger is passion. When we are really anger we are very passionate! We care deeply about something. Regardless of how it looks, anger is always a call for change. If we understand it and use anger to work for us, it never has to become large or mean. Instead it is like an inner advocate working for us with clarity and firmness createing the changes we need. I will work with you to harness your anger and get it working for you rather than against you!

While anger management programs are helpful, most never get to the root of the individual's personal issues or triggers. I work with both men and women to realize learned behaviour and personal belief systems that continue to cause problems. I will work with you on your own individual triggers that lead to anger and help you learn how to better identify and change the thoughts and feelings that are leading to the angry behaviour. I use mostly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
