I consider professional development and career growth as an important part of self-realization. A career requires a lot: motivation, hard work, knowledge, skills, persistence, and passion. On the other hand, it gives a feeling of well-functioning, a satisfaction that efforts have paid off, a sense of belonging to community, and the sense of being proud of your achievements. For almost 20 years I have been helping people to build their careers and accomplish more than they expected in the beginning of counselling. A career is more complex than most people think. It is intertwined with identity, aspirations and values. During our sessions we will not be focused on finding the “perfect” job or an infallible 5-year plan. Instead, we will investigate your passions, values, and skills. We will discover fears, hopes and the story you have used for historical career decisions. By doing this we will be able to develop meaningful steps towards your personal fulfillment.

Dr. Strauss offers career counseling through New Leaf Psychology Centre. In order to facilitate decision making, sessions will first assess your current skills, assets and interests. Your level of fulfillment at your current place of work, and obstacles to fulfillment will also be discussed. Potential career changes will be reviewed, with the goal of helping you come to a decision that you are comfortable with.

Being a trained Life Coach, I help clients identify their dreams, bent and natural gifts, so they can build careers which utilize their skill set. From there, I help them set SMART goals – i.e. Simple, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic & Time-focused – broken down into smaller goals, so they never get discouraged, plus they get to witness and celebrate their progress every step of the way. I believe in walking alongside the client in their journey to complete what they set out to do, tackling obstacles as they come – shyness, communication issues, confidence, etc. – so nothing will stop them!

My approach to career counselling aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their careers, maximize their potential, and achieve personal and professional success and satisfaction. It involves exploring and evaluating factors such as interests, skills, values, personality traits, and life circumstances to help clients align their career goals with their personal and professional aspirations. I have a PhD in leadership and policy and a background in business. I've had many jobs and careers from modelling, personal training, to a Bell operator and a Purolator driver. I've been in retail sales, and sold photocopies, PR, and software. I've been a teacher of primary/junior students, and professor in sales, and a professor in graduate education. I also help folks unpack and explore the impact that systems of oppression (patriarchy and capitalism) have had on one's identity, lived experiences and internalised messages of not enough.
