In order to gain a better understanding of a person's situation, their behaviour is explored in the context of Family Systems Therapy (FST). FST looks at the family as an emotional unit and identifies the patterns of interactions that are maintaining the challenges, including the patterns of communication & language used to discuss the challenges. This helps to better understand the impact of family dynamics, family values, beliefs about gender roles, status or power of family members, and cultural & ethnicity on a person's self-perception. I also use strengths-based practices with families in order to transfer strengths of individuals & family systems into therapeutic awareness.

Gestalt therapy is a systems‐oriented, immediate‐experience‐oriented, and affect‐oriented therapy that is highly effective for families. Unlike other therapies, gestalt regards the client system's emergent processes as the central focus, and it emphasizes that growth occurs as the family and its members are helped to greater self‐awareness and responsibility for their own functioning. Dynamic forces within your family may need some the maintenance. How can a sense of peace and equilibrium be brought back into your home? I am not afraid to work with intense emotional outbreaks. I can help support family unity with strength and care! Develop better ways of communicating with each other!

A family can be characterized like a web bound together by feelings, customs, beliefs and behaviours. Whatever happens in one part of the web is felt by other parts as a means of balancing things so that the web does not break. When there is stress in this connectivity or there is a break in the family, we may see any part of the family or the entire family in therapy. Participation by all members becomes crucial in determining the whole picture of what is happening. Sometimes, if the therapy is successful in guiding one or two crucial changes in the family's functioning, stress is significantly alleviated restoring the "web" to a healthier balance.

A family often changes because of the difficulties one person may be having. Alternatively, the challenges experienced by each family member affects the whole unit. When this happens, family members begin to push themselves apart from everyone else, leaving the family experiencing more conflict and feelings of emptiness. My approach is to bring the family members together and facilitate a respectful dialogue between everyone. Having an opportunity to speak one's mind without feeling judged or criticized can do wonders for increasing understanding amongst family members. It's also an important step for creating change.

'Family' is supposed to be a safe haven, a place that always feels like home. But when there is unresolved conflict and unsatisfying relationships 'family' can feel like anything but! I love to help families (including multi-generational families) be able to communicate and function in healthier ways so that the hurt can stop and love and understanding can be expressed and felt. If you've been thinking about family counselling for a while, don't wait any longer. You'd be surprised at the difference that can be made in a relatively short period of time and how family relationships can heal and grow into safer, more loving places to call 'home'!

Working with families is assessed on a case by case basis in my practice. If your family is assessed as a good fit for my practice we will work together to support problem-solving, increase clear communication, reduce tension and increase ease between family members. I also work with parents to understand the complex needs of babies, children, youth, and young adults by learning and practicing tools to support compassionate parenting. In my individual practice, I work with clients to understand the complexities of family systems, how to navigate boundary setting with family members, and we work together to practice tools that support healing wounds created from trauma within families.

Sometimes it is valuable to have a parent(s) and their teenager together work towards healing the rifts that tear their relationship apart. The same applies to parents and their young adult children. Through the family work people note they are able to understand and get 'heard' by their family members.

My family therapy provides coaching, support, guidance and empowerment to all members. I coach parents to become better "parenting coaches", and children to become better "game of life" payers. I help each member tap into his/her "life tools" and empower personal abilities, flexibility, and self-control. It is not "power over" another person, but "power shared." It is about becoming the right person. When you focus on your own behaviors and the way you treat the person you love, it will not be long before things begin to change. we can make ourselves do what we need to do in order to become the kind of person who is worthy of being in a healthy family relationship.

At Home or Private Discreet Intensives

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. My approach to family therapy is to allow all members of the family the same opportunity to be heard in a non-judgmental space. My role is not to take sides or point out fault but to help develop a framework, which will promote healthy communication. We work on "rules of engagement"; finding time to foster a healthy kinship and also help to promote boundaries.

Every family deserves to have harmony and respect. When one person is struggling with some issues, it is possible that the whole family suffers as well. I use systemic Family therapy to address people not on individual level but as people in relationship, dealing with the interactions of groups and their interactional patterns and dynamics. I teach communication, conflict resolution and assertiveness skills to help people communicate and problem solve their family issues.

I have worked with adult children and their parents, to create a safe space for them to work on the different perspectives on issues. Family Therapy gives them a respectful way to listen to the other party's voices instead of insisting on their own voice to be heard. It may need to start with better communication skills, active listening, understanding the cycle or the pattern which might have existed for a long long time. Learning how to build healthier boundaries in the family.
