Career counseling, although a ‘named form’ of counseling in itself, is yet quite transient. Usually once I begin working with a client who is requesting career counseling, we find that the hiccups they are experiencing in their quest is based on fear, anxiety and/or stress, health issues, sometimes addictions (or the addictions of others), anger issues, depression, or even shrapnel from their family of origin. So I do not view career counseling as a sole issue but rather a symptom. I love to work in this arena since it allows me to be a CSI agent for an hour, unlocking hidden truths that have become speed bumps along life’s journey to achieve one’s personal best.

While most career counselors love to give you capacity based profiles of what your talents and interests are for your best bet career choices, Grey Matters international believes that most people make predictably irrational decisions and then after making them learn way to make them fit into their identities using various types of rationalizations and strategies. We are able to assist folks in career counseling type settings by giving a deeper look at their decision making profile so they can better understand where the core frustration or desire is coming from in the world of work. Our struggle with finding a fulfilling and practical career in our lives is often related to how we feel about ourselves. Our self-esteem is connected to our roles in life, career being a central role. Our self-worth is connected to how we value ourselves simply because we exist. We need to find a balance between self-esteem and self-worth in order to make the big choices in life like our career. In my practice we work from the ground up where the client explores who they are, how they have adapted to please others, and what they want for themselves in life. We pair that deeper work with practical ways clients can find a career that matches who they are from a grounded and confident place.
