Anger management is a series of preventative and reactionary steps that help us regulate our emotions. While anger management is about executing these skills, the successful implementation depends on a foundational understanding of what anger is and how it operates in one’s life. Without understanding angers unique roots for each individual, anger management techniques become especially challenging to implement. My approach to anger management involves establishing a foundational understanding of anger by examining personal underlying fears and needs. With this foundation set, the individual is able to integrate a personal understanding of anger consistently with strategies and techniques.

Being angry when something goes wrong, or somebody annoys you is completely normal. The question is: do you like to feel that way? Sometimes the anger is extraordinarily strong, and it can make you lose control. Do you like the consequences of being angry? - headaches, regrets of words you said, and actions you did? Anger is complicated and it often has deep roots. For this reason, it can be difficult to “just control it”. My experience of working with jail inmates shows that digging deeper into the past can help to find connections between trigger events and such strong reactions. When you have better understanding of your anger, the reaction can change and no strong control will be needed.

Anger can feel like an emotional experience that we have no control over. In therapy, you can explore the root causes of anger and how it impacts your life, your experiences, and your relationships. You can learn skills to effectively respond to anger, ground yourself when feeling angry, and de-escalate when anger is impacting your relationships. I work with individuals, couples and families. Anger is a normal human emotion–an essential part of being–something hard-wired and adaptive. It motivates us to take action, keeps us aware, and can bring us to self-reflection. It is a form of communication expressing our true inner feelings. For some, anger becomes an overwhelming, well-engrained, unhealthy habit; a maladaptive, go-to defense mechanism that disrupts communication and paradoxically masks true inner feelings of vulnerability. It takes courage to challenge. But through psychotherapeutic, CBT-based intervention, I take pride in working to help adults unpack the pain, find acceptance through understanding, and seize new coping strategies that will serve them productively.

Anger is a normal and healthy experience and is part of our fight/flight defensive response to protect ourselves. However, it can become damaging to one's physical, mental and emotional health if it becomes chronic and create an attitude of bitterness, resentment, and even hatred for self and others. Pent up or hidden anger can be harmful to the self and others, although acting out of anger is also most often harmful. Learn how to mange, cope with, and decrease your anger and make better choices and have better responses. Life becomes must happier when you do!

In my work with anger, I help clients understand it not as something to suppress, but as a powerful emotion that often signals unmet needs, boundaries, or pain. Together, we explore the deeper layers beneath anger—such as hurt, fear, or frustration—while developing tools to express it safely and effectively. Through mindful awareness and emotional regulation strategies, clients learn to pause, reflect, and respond with greater clarity rather than react impulsively. My aim is to help individuals transform anger into insight, strength, and more authentic communication in their relationships.

Anger is one of the emotions that can get us into trouble in our relationships and even with ourselves. First of all, all emotions are neither right or wrong, it's our behavior that can be the problem - how we process (or don't process) our feelings of anger is usually the issue. Gaining self awareness in how you feel anger in your body and then gaining strategies to process it in a healthy matter is the focus I take in working with managing anger in clients.

Anger management counseling can help to identify stressors and learn the steps to stay calm in the face of anger. The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

Self management of strong emotions including anger can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves and, in turn, more compassion for the human experience in all its manifestations. Through the therapeutic process in which one feels safe, freedom to explore powerful feelings, and constructive ways of managing frustration can be developed so that anxious, stressful or volatile reactions can be channeled for the well-being of the self and others.

In 30 years of helping people, I have found that how we handle our feelings is a major contributor to our joy, pleasure and success in life, not just in relationships but pursuing our work and our goals as well. Anger can be a powerful motivator or an obstacle in getting what we want. I have an approach for understanding the healthy purpose of anger, and becoming aware of and in control of your natural physiological arousal process so that your angry behavior can stop getting in the way of what you really want. You can obtain the tools and resources to work with this arousal process, giving you more choices and chances to succeed, rather than letting anger take away those choices.

Anger is a common and useful emotional reaction. However, there are times when anger is excessive or extreme and controls a person to the point that it is hurtful to them, their life, and their loved ones. I work with clients to understand their experience of anger, learn to identify potential triggers and underlying issues, and develop coping skills to manage these issues and emotions. Clients will learn relaxation or calming strategies, how to communicate to reduce angry outbursts, problem solving skills, and how to alter negative thinking which may be contributing to the anger. This often results in clients feeling happier, more relaxed, and having improved relationships.
