Due to various challenges that I experienced as a child I often felt I had the weight of the world on my shoulder. Therefore as a teenager and most of my childhood I suffered with depression. My experiences however also revealed my life’s purpose and incited the desire to support others ex-periencing their own challenges. It was only through the support of key people in my life and the grace of God that changed my outlook on life. The Christian faith offers a great many resources which are helpful in facing the challenges of life, the challenges of relationship. Faith, at its best, is designed to help negotiate life as it really is. It is a source of courage and helps us to identify what really matters. The Christian faith holds love at its centre and guides us to act towards our selves and towards others out of love. It helps us keep our egos in check, knowing there is something (God) greater than our limited understanding with is at work in our lives. I enter into discussions with clients about these matters, urging them to draw upon their own faith. I do not quote the Bible to direct them.

For many of us faith is not just important it is critical. As a professional therapist, I work with all kinds of faiths, with respect and honor. However I do identify and enjoy working within the context of Christianity. Over the last twenty-five years I have worked closely with believers, congregations, denominations and their leaders through individual, marriage and family issues but also issues of faith. Some times we struggle with our faith and it becomes more of a stumbling block. Other times it becomes our anchor. Having Christ as the center of history and ones life allows for resources that significantly bolster therapy.

Our faith is an integral part of who we are and it can influence all aspects of our life. Situations and circumstances can occur that can shake our hope and question our faith. As a Christian psychotherapist, I work with both people of faith and people with no religious orientation. It is my goal to respect and honor each person and the journey they are on.

To me, the greatest part of being a Christian is being Christ-like, meaning, looking at each and every individual as a worthwhile human being, created for a purpose. When people stop believing in themselves, I like to help them get back on track and feel good about themselves. I’ve successfully worked with disadvantaged kids, the elderly, troubled teens, ashamed individuals, and couples feeling hopeless. I see my clients through the Lord’s eyes, as precious and valuable, and I do my best to help them look at themselves that way. I strongly believe in divine forgiveness and lack of judgment, which allows people in the darkest places to forgive themselves and have hope for a better future.

As a pastor's kid and missionary's kid, and then as a leader in a not-for-profit Christian ministry, I've been there. I offer holistic counselling that allows clients to incorporate their faith. As a psychotherapist is a Christian and who was trained from a Christian perspective, I am able to integrate biblical principles with psychological techniques. Using Scripture as a foundation, I guide clients through their struggles with spiritual insights and therapeutic methods that align with Christian values.

My greatest joy over 30 years has been helping people of faith, both Jews and Christians, grow in their relationship with God while negotiating the painful experiences and choices of life. Sometimes it is even our religious community which has been the source of those painful experiences. I believe we often have difficulty seeing who He truly is because of those experiences and choices, both ours and others’. Sometimes we are struggling with how to keep a faith perspective when our prayers seem unanswered.

When requested we have therapists who are able to integrate bible teaching and prayer into professional therapy approaches. A number of our therapists have spent time studying the integration of Christian faith and professional counselling. When Christians are going through a difficult time they are usually looking for a counsellor that shares their world view. A Christian therapy approach can help people connect with God in the midst of their pain. Working through their concerns with the integration of their faith can help them bring their whole self to the process. We also understand that sometimes people have been hurt in Christian communities and are sensitive to these dynamics.

We all know that life is not always easy. Sometimes it can help to talk to someone who understands, and who can help you find a way through life’s challenges. Years ago, I found that the stresses of work and home life, combined with a stubborn refusal to admit I needed help, led me to a place of burnout. A counsellor came alongside me, helping me work though issues and find the strength and resilience I needed to get back into life. It was this experience that led me to become a psychotherapist, and I have been blessed over the years to walk alongside others as they learn to live happier, more fulfilled lives.

Within a Biblical framework, counselling becomes an even richer process. A Biblical base simply means that the therapist believes that all human beings were created in the image of God, intended for relationship and designed with the capacity for growth and change. Forgiveness, personal empowerment, learning to love self and other are critical parts of the process. Jesus said "I came to heal the broken hearted" and at some point, most of us would love to sink into that compassionate offer. Biblical based counselling does not infer any judgement or inflexibility within the therapeutic process.

Whatever your religious beliefs, your spirituality, your faith, your cultural and family background, we believe that everyone has difficulty with it at times throughout their lives. Sometimes we need someone to be able to talk with about these things that aren't directly connected to our family, or our spiritual dwellings. Sometimes we just need someone unbiased, or someone that believes similar things that we do, because it can be lonely wrestling with our spirituality. My approach to Christian counselling draws on cognitive science and the understanding of Jesus as a guide into metanoia — a transformation of mind and being. This is not about doctrine but about moving beyond propositional belief into participatory knowing — a lived alignment with love, presence, and meaning. I help clients heal from spiritual injury, alienation, or disconnection from the Sacred, restoring right relationship with self, others, and the divine through a process grounded in agape and transformation.
