Human beings experience a constant state of transition throughout their lifespan, changing and evolving in relation to self, others and their world.  While each of us is born with an innate biological base that guides our internal needs and experience, there are many external forces that also shape our development and personality.  Such forces include family and societal systems, cultural background, gender, race, education, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation.  While we have no control over our genetic programming or certain circumstances and events in our lives, most of us have the ability to gain new knowledge and information, to recognize our strengths, and to find new and creative solutions to problems.  Counselling provides an opportunity for insight, personal growth and change.
Maureen believes that effective psychotherapy occurs when trust, openness and honesty are established within a safe, therapeutic relationship. She believes that change is optimized within a collaborative relationship, where both therapist and client work closely together to establish clear goals.  Her philosophy is that each person has the capacity for growth and change and the ability to heal. Her compassionate, non-judgmental and collaborative approach helps clients tap into their strengths and abilities, gain insight into the circumstances of their lives, and find solutions to problems. When people recognize their capacity to effect change, they are more able to move through adversity and despair.
As a counsellor, Maureen applies an integrative approach that draws from a wide spectrum of psychotherapeutic theories.  She uses a client-centered approach to create an environment of warmth, empathy and genuinenesss. She draws from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to explore and challenge negative beliefs and self-talk.  Her use of Solution Focussed Therapy highlights the exceptions to problems, and helps clients recognize their competency and construct new solutions. She often uses mindfulness techniques that help clients self-regulate and stay in the moment with their experience. Her Feminist approach honours the experiences of each individual and reframes psychological distress, not as a disease, but as a response to the circumstances of life.  She has trainining in Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing (current research demonstrates that EMDR is effective in the treatment of trauma and PTSD).  Maureen is sensitive to the individual needs of her clients and attentive to their sense of safety and readiness for change. Her compassionate and caring approach and warm personality allows her to quickly establish rapport with clients.
