Mental Health in Milton

Milton is often mistakenly considered a suburb of Mississauga. This generalization often proves to be beneficial for residents of Milton, due to their close proximity to facilities available in bigger cities. Towns such as Oakville and Brampton are also close by. A prevalent mental health issue in Milton is the population's growing struggle with substance abuse and prescription maintenance. Many residents who have suffered accidents or health scares continue to have trouble regulating their medication. Substance abuse often becomes a problem when individuals stop consulting doctors and take their medication into their own hands.

Residents of Milton who need emergency attention, or want to discuss their mental health options with a professional have 24 hour access to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Distress Crisis Line.2 For further information, call 408 HELP.

Current Initiatives

As government initiatives go, the North Halton Region Mental Health Association operates a community-based mental health initiative that provides city residents with the resources they need to help themselves.3 For individuals struggling with substance abuse, the North Halton Mental Health Clinics (NHMHC) runs community based psychiatric assessments and early state psychosis prevention programs for adults and youth.4 The services provided at both of these organizations are completely non-profit, counselling, therapy and all forms of abuse rehabilitation are done confidentially and residents can feel confident in the fact that their privacy is protected throughout the process.
