Anxiety and Stress are the norm in today's world. Our fast-paced society pulls our attention in many directions and often away from ourselves. Being disconnected from our feelings, needs and wants is often a cause of anxiety. Mindfulness-based counselling is a powerful way to have us create an island of sanity for ourselves amidst the speed of our lives. By learning to reconnect with ourselves amidst the busyness of life, we are put back into relationship with our hearts and what is truly meaningful to us.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues for children and teens today. I work with children so they can better understand their anxiety, and teach them how to challenge anxious thoughts and relieve distressing symptoms. I also coach parents to help their children manage their anxiety at home, and to help their children recognize and manage panic attacks.

We worry and fret over family problems or feel jittery at the prospect of asking the boss for a raise. However, if worries and fears are preventing you from living your life the way you'd like to, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder. There are six major types of anxiety disorders, each with their own distinct symptom profile: generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. I work with adults , teenagers, and children experiencing anxiety. The method of treatment I primarily utilize is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). I will be running groups for children ages 8-12 and teenagers ages 13-17 (or almost 18) one to two times per year, depending on interest). I also incorporate stress-reducing techniques which will be demonstrated in session. I also work with individuals experiencing burnout, including work-related and caregiver burnout. Most clients state that they do notice a difference in as little as three sessions.

Anxiety and stress are a normal part of life, as they warn you that there is something to pay attention to. However, excessive amounts of anxiety can cause you to feel overwhelmed, which may interfere with daily functioning. These concerns can also cause problems in relationships and other areas of life, which often increases stress levels even more. When working with clients the root of the problem is explored, and I also teach skills to relax, how to change negative thinking patterns, and ways to manage stress in a healthy way when it does occur.

Working with clients for 15+ years, I worked extensively with clients who experience anxiety and depression. In my experience anxiety and stress are two different things. Stress is being unable to adequately handle a situation that goes beyond our ability to cope. Stress is normal given an entirely new situation we are faced with such as a new job, etc. This usually requires learning some new coping skills. However, anxiety is a sustained feeling of unease that in its extreme can be experienced as panic or the inability to calm oneself. Often I have found that anxiety that has been sustained for a long time is generally connected to trauma and is best healed by working with the body.

We live in a world that gives us the message that to work and manage home life is to be successful, yet the lived experience of this belief leaves many feeling they are stressed and thus "not successful" because they cannot handle the world of ups and downs. We are taught to question ourselves in those moments and not the beliefs we are told about what it means to balance work and life. Furthermore our histories can at times leave us with coping strategies that often lead to stress and anxiety. Meditation has been showing more benefits to individuals dealing with anxiety and stress. I am a certified meditation instructor and use a combination of therapy and mindfulness.
