Stressors and anxiety are a normal part of life. It is how you respond to the changes that life sends your way that makes the difference between being resilient or unhealthy. Distinguishing between unhealthy and healthy anxiety and learning to effectively manage stressors are key life skills. Also what we tell ourselves about a given situation has a lot to do with how we manage it. Together we will explore your stressors and work at eliminating your ineffective beliefs and developing ways to manage difficult situations more effectively. .

Anxiety is a normal, human response to stressful events that we each experience at times ... like delivering a speech (or presentation at work or narrowly avoiding a car accident. It becomes a problem when we feel anxious a LOT, or our response is out of all proportion to the situation, or we avoid the provoking situation/thing, and it interferes with our day-to-day lives. Anxiety is treatable. I can help you reduce your stress response, manage your physiological responses (like breathing), change your thinking about the feared event, and build your repertoire of self-care and relaxation-enhancing activities -- all of which will reduce your anxiety and enhance your quality of life.

Anxiety and Stress are the norm in today's world. Our fast-paced society pulls our attention in many directions and often away from ourselves. Being disconnected from our feelings, needs and wants is often a cause of anxiety. Mindfulness-based counselling is a powerful way to have us create an island of sanity for ourselves amidst the speed of our lives. By learning to reconnect with ourselves amidst the busyness of life, we are put back into relationship with our hearts and what is truly meaningful to us.

Anxiety can be so painful both mentally and physically. This is where I begin my work with clients, on the distressing symptoms. It is important to get these symptoms to a manageable level so that people can resume their lives. I use a variety of tools to help bring relief starting in the first session. Once the symptoms have begun to decrease we explore the deeper root causes of anxiety to ensure that these symptoms do not return. So that clients can live a life without distressing anxiety.

Anxiety and stress seem so common today, that they may seem to be unavoidable. I can tell you that you will be able to change the way you feel. At it's heart, anxiety is a warning system that something is wrong, but if it dominates your life, often you can't tell the difference between a minor blip and a major catastrophe. It's all overwhelming. Stress to some extent motivates you, but over a certain threshold can paralyze you. I have worked for many years with anxiety and stress, and will help you to negotiate through the challenges of bringing them back within your control. You can develop the understanding and skills to thrive in a challenging world.

While most treatment approaches for anxiety and stress are effective on the surface, they don’t treat the real problem. Mantras, deep breathing, and rational dialogues about your fear being irrational rarely work---for most people don’t believe it or you! Imagine if you can trick the brain into changing without you telling your conscious mind that you are changing it? Problem with anxiety and stress is that the brain in this state knows you want to change it and it resists. Contact Kevin@kevinfleminphd.com for the ultimate stress and anxiety solution that will literally change your brain's autonomic nervous system patterns while you sit on your butt. 877-606-6161.

Working with anxiety is a specialty of mine. Arguably, in the field of psychology we know quite a bit about anxiety as compared many other presenting concerns. In my approach with anxiety we will often begin with interventions that address behaviours and thoughts. Starting in this way will generally lead to effective symptom management in a few months’ time. Subsequently we can begin to work through past experiences that keep anxiety present. It has been my professional experience that exploring these emotional experiences increases the likelihood of sustainable symptom management in the long term.

Working with clients for 15+ years, I worked extensively with clients who experience anxiety and depression. In my experience anxiety and stress are two different things. Stress is being unable to adequately handle a situation that goes beyond our ability to cope. Stress is normal given an entirely new situation we are faced with such as a new job, etc. This usually requires learning some new coping skills. However, anxiety is a sustained feeling of unease that in its extreme can be experienced as panic or the inability to calm oneself. Often I have found that anxiety that has been sustained for a long time is generally connected to trauma and is best healed by working with the body.

Sometimes we are affected by anxiety - could be mild or a full blown panic attack. We notice that our thoughts race 'by themselves', our heart rate is elevated, our palms may be sweaty, we are restless and have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep. In counselling you can learn to stand up to anxiety, to identify your various responses to stressors and find effective ways to change the ways you think and feel. Learn ways to express your worries, fears and concerns and ways to get your needs met.

People today choose to do counselling for a variety of reasons. Think about what you are struggling with in the moment; it may be depression, anxiety, or it may be something like wanting to change jobs, finding motivation, or building confidence. Therapy is for everyone and it is empowering. You may not think so, but seeking the guidance of a professional counsellor or psychotherapist to overcome your concerns is an indicator of individual courage. In a warm, supportive and non-judgmental environment, you will gain new skills to cope with your challenges. The process of therapy can help shift your perception and change unhelpful patterns of behaviour into meaning growth and empowerment.

Stress is the body’s natural reaction to danger. It’s meant to help identify a problem that needs your attention to fix. However, when the stress lasts too long, it can start to impact our physical and mental health. In my practice we look at understanding the root of all stress or anxiety and together we create practical, meaningful coping strategies.

Stress is when our old coping strategies are ineffective to help us with our current challenges in life. Stress management is about adapting to the challenges before us and this is not always easy. At times, our stress is magnified by anxiety and anxiety is based in fear. One of the strategies I teach clients is to ask themselves is it anxiety? Is it a genuine and imminent danger to you? When it's anxiety then I have strategies to help you evaluate your stressors and your environment to reduce the impact on your day to day life.

We live in a world that gives us the message that to work and manage home life is to be successful, yet the lived experience of this belief leaves many feeling they are stressed and thus "not successful" because they cannot handle the world of ups and downs. We are taught to question ourselves in those moments and not the beliefs we are told about what it means to balance work and life. Furthermore our histories can at times leave us with coping strategies that often lead to stress and anxiety. Meditation has been showing more benefits to individuals dealing with anxiety and stress. I am a certified meditation instructor and use a combination of therapy and mindfulness.

Anxiety is, simply, put, unrelenting worry that continues after the thing or circumstance you are worrying about is removed or it is the exaggerated worry about something. In anxiety, the sheer size of the worry in relation to the concern, the realistic vs. non-realistic nature of the concern, and the frequency or level of control related to concern matter. OCD relates to obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. Social Anxiety is an intrusive, disruptive fear of people or certain social situations. Often, we see fears of judgement, body image, looking awkward or stupid, as being thematic in social anxiety thoughts. Just to name a few example of how anxiety can present itself.

In order to effectively manage anxiety, worries and stress, one needs to learn to reduce and relax the amygdala’s fear and panic response. Adopting a mindfulness mindset, paired with stress reduction techniques, are one of the best antidotes to being carried away or paralyzed by stress, worries and anxiety. By practicing mindfulness-based activities and tools specifically designed to combat and better manage the effects of stress and anxiety, you will release the heavy burden they can cause. You will learn how to more peacefully coexist with your thoughts and your emotions in the present moment, thus creating a state of inner calm to help contain and lower your stress, worries and anxiety.

Anxiety and stress is an inevitable part of all of our lives and it serves a great purpose when experienced in moderation. Anxiety and stress are one of the most commonly presented concern that clients want to address. I use a holist, person-centered, cognitive behavioural approach to address anxiety. In some cases, I utilize some of my trauma-informed training to tackle this issue to help the client learn how to take back their power and manage their anxiety and stress rather than allowing the anxiety and stress to take control of them. We often work on developing skills and strategies that you can use in your daily life to feel empowered, happier, and at peace.

Anxiety disorders commonly coexist with addiction tendencies. Anxiety can severely inhibit a person's life, causing them to feel an irrational amount of panic, fear and other negative emotions in any given circumstance. Severe anxiety may influence a person to avoid leaving their house, or to become paralyzed in situations they interpret as stressful. Many people who struggle with anxiety will try to self medicate with alcohol or drugs, which ultimately makes their symptoms worse. A dual diagnosis of addiction and anxiety requires special treatment considerations; the kind that Valiant Recovery provides.

I approach anxiety differently from many therapists. Instead of struggling to fight against the anxious thoughts and feelings, I encourage people to explore what is feeding and maintaining them. They develop tools and strategies to move forward despite their paralyzing thoughts and feelings. We learn how to change behaviour based on what is most important to us rather than continuing to be held hostage by stress, panic and anxiety. This values-driven approach can guide behaviour change long-term. I believe that it is only through acceptance and thoroughly understanding our feelings that changes can really happen.

Does it sometimes feel like anxiety is a monster that seems to have control over your life? That stress has a stranglehold on you? That everything you do is organized around avoiding the intrusion of these awful feelings? That you feel so powerless to change any of it that you are ready to explode. And sometimes are afraid you will. Feelings of anxiety are incredibly uncomfortable, intense, overwhelming at times and even terrifying. They can overwhelm our thoughts leaving us unable to think about nothing more than worries we have about the future and what could happen, or horrible reruns of what has already happened in the past. We begin to turn all our resources toward avoiding these thoughts and feelings. The more effort we take to avoid feeling...(view profile to read more)

Fear, doubt, worry? Butterflies in the stomach? Anxiety affects 5% of the population, and is one of the oldest and most common mental health challenges around. 60% of the physical issues that take people to a doctor's office are related to stress. Many people want symptom relief, which I do, but how it shows up in your life is individual to you. I explore your life and work with you to unearth 'holistic' roots that may be keeping it in place.
