Anxiety and stress can make it hard to think clearly, make decisions and find enjoyment in every day activities. While living with some stress is normal, anxiety can get in the way of living your life the way you want. It is difficult to overcome the impact of anxiety without professional help. Many of my clients have tried to cope on their own or with some help, but find that the anxiety never truly goes away. I can help you or your child in identifying the underlying causes of your anxiety, and to learn how to successfully cope with life's challenges and to live more fully.

Unfortunately with our incredibly fast paced society, anxiety and stress have become all-too-familiar struggles for all ages. People feel pressure from the many commitments in their lives, and with the beauty and curse of technology, we often feel we cannot get a break. It has become imperative that we learn ways of managing our anxiety and stress, and of slowing down our systems so that they do not get to a point of explosion. Many people enter into therapy at such a point, and we work hard to create a space where they can breathe and learn strategies for coping, as well as re-narrating old patterns.

In the therapy time anxiety and stress are explored. People with strong levels of anxiety and panic can find relief from the feelings. After the sessions, people often find that they do not need to avoid a variety of people or situations they previously avoided that led to the anxiety. They may also learn how to manage and eventually experience minor levels or no anxiety at all. Stress and methods to reduce and eliminate unhealthy levels of stress are also dealt with.

Working with clients for 15+ years, I worked extensively with clients who experience anxiety and depression. In my experience anxiety and stress are two different things. Stress is being unable to adequately handle a situation that goes beyond our ability to cope. Stress is normal given an entirely new situation we are faced with such as a new job, etc. This usually requires learning some new coping skills. However, anxiety is a sustained feeling of unease that in its extreme can be experienced as panic or the inability to calm oneself. Often I have found that anxiety that has been sustained for a long time is generally connected to trauma and is best healed by working with the body.

Anxiety and stress are a normal part of life, as they warn you that there is something to pay attention to. However, excessive amounts of anxiety can cause you to feel overwhelmed, which may interfere with daily functioning. These concerns can also cause problems in relationships and other areas of life, which often increases stress levels even more. When working with clients the root of the problem is explored, and I also teach skills to relax, how to change negative thinking patterns, and ways to manage stress in a healthy way when it does occur.

We have evolved for survival, NOT HAPPINESS, which is why we all have a propensity for anxiety and stress. It's natural, however, it's HOW YOU DEAL WITH IT that makes the difference. Think of all the ways stress and anxiety are affecting your life. Now imagine the joy and fulfilment of living your dreams without being immobilized by stress and anxiety! Here are some of the potential benefits: improved health, weight loss, smoking cessation, alcohol reduction or elimination, improved relationships and marriage, etc. All of these benefits can occur when you learn how to manage, NOT AVOID, stress and anxiety. Contrary to popular thought, anxiety isn’t a bad feeling. It can work in our favour to warn us against bad or scary situations and can help us know when and if we should be worried. Often though, the anxiety alarm can go off in safe or every day situations, resulting in mis-cueing us that something is wrong and telling us we should feel stress in these moments. I use several different approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to work through the mis-cueing of anxiety, slowing down thoughts, understanding the psycho-somatic responses (how and where we feel it in our body) and why you are feeling anxious when we do.

My approach to stress and anxiety is figuring out the route of the problem. I explore triggers and patterns with clients- and introduce anxiety management techniques, through the use of mindfulness based activities and interventions. Through cognitive-behavioural therapy and solutions-focused therapy, we will work together to gain coping mechanisms and to challenge your negative thinking patterns that may be controlling your life, and preventing you from moving forward.

In order to effectively manage anxiety, worries and stress, one needs to learn to reduce and relax the amygdala’s fear and panic response. Adopting a mindfulness mindset, paired with stress reduction techniques, are one of the best antidotes to being carried away or paralyzed by stress, worries and anxiety. By practicing mindfulness-based activities and tools specifically designed to combat and better manage the effects of stress and anxiety, you will release the heavy burden they can cause. You will learn how to more peacefully coexist with your thoughts and your emotions in the present moment, thus creating a state of inner calm to help contain and lower your stress, worries and anxiety.

Anxiety and stress are a natural part of life, we all feel anxiety and stress at multiple points in our life. Anxiety and stress come to visit us because they are trying to tell us something and we need to acknowledge what is going on for us. Anxiety often comes to protect us and keep us safe and yet we do everything we can to remove it from our life, even when it may be there for a valid reason. Together using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy I help clients struggling with Anxiety and Stress.

Anxiety can be very distressing and lead to all sorts of physiological symptoms such as heart palpitations, sleep issues, fear, panic, and shortness of breath. Often times the source of the anxiety can be discovered by carefully examining our thought processes and discovering what past or future events are causing us distress. Sometimes learning new techniques of breathing and mindfulness can help soothe us when our anxious mind kicks into gear.
