Anger is often called a secondary emotion. It shows up when other more primary emotions have been rising. Those other emotions could be anxiety, sadness or feeling misunderstood. Together, we can address the source of your anger and develop a healthy and sustainable way to deal with strong emotions. We all feel anger. It is how you use that anger that can cause harm to those you love, care about and work with. Anger is a secondary emotion. It is the emotion that people see in those who feel hurt and misunderstood. Anger is also an indication that your boundaries have been crossed. Let me show you how to use your anger appropriately and to uncover some of the beliefs that make anger your go to reaction.

I offer counselling for anger. Did you know that anger is a primal emotion, meaning that it is an automatic "reaction" to situations, located in the hind brain along with functions such as breathing and heart rate? Humans use anger as an unconscious defence mechanism when they feel threatened, which indicates that it is an emotion actually based in fear. It is important to understand this in order to be able to empathize with these people, making them feel safe enough to let their guard down and reveal what they are so afraid of. The anger then fades away and I am able to teach them how to rewire their brains in order to "respond" to stressful situations rather than react without thinking.

I do work with individuals around issues with anger, irritability, and frustration. However, I don't provide "anger management" courses or classes, or structured teaching in this regard. I recognize this can be helpful for some individuals, but prefer to work within the context of psychotherapy to understand and develop personal resources to manage emotional challenges. If you're looking for a structured class or program, I would recommend checking out community resources such as those offered by Catholic Family Services (note - you don't have to be Catholic!)

As a counsellor who has been working with clients for 15+ years, clients who have issues with anger management are often struggling with depression. From my experience, anger is a symptom of a problem rather than a cause. Anger often results when we find ourselves unable to cope with a situation in which we feel powerless and helpless. There is also a difference between anger and rage. Rage is anger that seems to come out of nowhere and feels out of control. Rage is often brought on by feelings of shame and feeling victimized. In my experience, when anger or rage goes unexpressed it often comes out in the body as pain, fatigue, or health issues.

Anger is a two-edged sword. In one direction it can work for your good, telling you when things do not seem fair or right to you, and then giving you the motivation to do something about it. But in the opposite direction, anger can literally destroy you and those around you. Because this discrimination is not easily achieved, some people end up trying to avoid anger altogether, others express it passively, while yet others turn it outward in explosive, deliberate, or chronic anger. Counselling can help you learn how to express your frustrations in healthy ways and let go of your destructive anger. You can make the needed changes in your life.

Anger usually results from a lack of awareness and skill in identifying and connecting with our internal experience and feelings. When this happens emotions get "bottled up" and anger is the inevitable result. I teach strategies and techniques to help clients learn to effectively deal, NOT AVOID, their feelings. Learning identify and accept our internal experience is the key to leading a meaningful and fulfilling life. The benefits are life changing - better relationships, less stress/anxiety and greater success and happiness.

Anger is a positive emotion! Learning to use anger positively can result in less stress, greater happiness and a stronger sense of pride in one’s own responses. Anger motivates and empowers people to act in pursuit of justice, resolution and healing. It is first of all a compliment for those having the motive of caring about what is right. The secret of getting your anger to work for you is to unhook it from the second motive of guaranteeing that future injustices will not happen. Pursuing that guarantee just burns people out! At McNaughton and Associates Counselling, we will help you get the most out of your anger in a healthy manner, and escape damaging consequences.

Anger issues can both result from distress in relationships and precipitate distress. Support in addressing anger issues can have a signifiacant positive impact on overall relationship functioning. The fact that relationships are one of our primary coping mechanisms multiplies the potential distress when anger is present as it impacts the very mechanisms we use to cope.
