Anger can be a highly adaptive emotion when we can listen to what it is telling us, and let it guide rather than control our response. It can signal to us that our needs are not being met, that our rights are being infringed upon, and can motivate us to stand up against the injustices we are faced with. However, when our anger gets the better of us, we can get lost in the storm. We lose sight of what is actually wrong and how to fix it, and can fall into a destructive cycles of toxic communication. If you can relate to the above perhaps I can help. Together we can formulate a plan to help you gain better understanding of you anger, and greater control over your emotions and life.

Anger often feels hard to control and we often react in ways we regret and negatively impact those around us. There are many negative beliefs about anger and often these beliefs result in us experiencing shame when we are angry. When helping someone with anger management my goal is to explore what triggers the anger, what the anger is indicating and develop healthy beliefs about anger. The focus of sessions will be developing healthy ways of releasing anger, coping strategies and emotional regulation

Anger influences the way in which we respond to and react to situations and people. For some people, anger is highly integrated in their style of interacting and can lead to problems in interpersonal relationships with family, friends, co-workers, etc. Anger does not need to continue to control your interactions. In my practice, I assist clients in understanding their anger and uncovering the emotions beneath (where appropriate). From an interpersonal approach, I work with clients in developing a redefined system for interacting with others and navigating conflict, as well as assist in developing coping strategies that alleviate the anger and associated emotions.

I approach the problem of anger differently from most therapists. Instead of struggling to fight against and manage anger, I encourage people to examine why anger is there and how it protects him or her so he or she can choose to do something different through the tools and strategies developed in sessions. Anger, like all strong emotions, is telling us something. If we can understand it, then it will lose its power over us. This frees us up to make different decisions about how we react with those around us that can be more aligned with who we want to be with those closest to us. This values-driven approach guides behaviour change long-term.

Anger is a powerful emotion that tells that something needs to change. Anger can be destructive or empowering. Inappropriate expression of anger can disrupt work and relationships. Even though you may have been taught that anger is taboo, bottling up anger is not the answer either. Poorly managed anger can also lead to problems with physical health. Well managed anger can help protect personal boundaries. Often anger masks other underlying feelings that are more painful. Anu helps you to not only manage anger and act assertively, but discover what information anger gives you about what you need or what your anger may be hiding.

Anger issues can both result from distress in relationships and precipitate distress. Support in addressing anger issues can have a signifiacant positive impact on overall relationship functioning. The fact that relationships are one of our primary coping mechanisms multiplies the potential distress when anger is present as it impacts the very mechanisms we use to cope.

I offer counselling for anger. Did you know that anger is a primal emotion, meaning that it is an automatic "reaction" to situations, located in the hind brain along with functions such as breathing and heart rate? Humans use anger as an unconscious defence mechanism when they feel threatened, which indicates that it is an emotion actually based in fear. It is important to understand this in order to be able to empathize with these people, making them feel safe enough to let their guard down and reveal what they are so afraid of. The anger then fades away and I am able to teach them how to rewire their brains in order to "respond" to stressful situations rather than react without thinking.

To work with anger management, we must get beyond the observable. While anger is an emotion that everyone feels from time to time, anger management typically means to self soothe or self regulate oneself in order to effectively manage an emotion we all feel at times. I dig beyond the typically issue of anger in order to work with the root cause of anger.

Registered Psychologist

We all get angry at times. Healthy, constructive anger is one way that little voice inside your body says, 'Hey, something's not OK -- can we fix this?' Anger is just an emotion, like any other -- love, loneliness, shame, hope, boredom, happiness, ad infinitum. What makes anger a problem is what you choose to do in response to that little voice ... is your response unhealthy? Destructive? Sometimes anger is a problem when you ignore that little voice -- that warning signal that alerts you that all is not OK inside you and insists that you DO something about it. If your anger is getting in the way of your relationships and your quality of life, I can help you turn things around.

Healthy, adaptive anger establishes safe boundaries and prevents one from being violated. Unhealthy, maladaptive anger is an unregulated emotion that can lead to rage and potentially sever your connection with others. During our counselling sessions you will learn the differences between adaptive and maladaptive anger and will engage in skill-building practices that both keep you safe as well as connected in your relationships.

Anger Therapist
Val Kendall, Ph.D., M.A., Dip. Ed., C.C.C.
Registered Psychologist
The Healing Space, 1407 10St. SW,, Calgary, Alberta T2R 1E7 | 403 278 7305
Dr. Val used to facilitate groups of those who had engaged in family violence, both men and women. Up front, number one is caring acceptance of the perpetrator, regardless of what he/she has done. A non-judgmental attitude is engendered based on Val's understanding that we are all children of God, and that we've all got a negative and a positive side, and those two sides are in constant battle. Helping people recognize their physiological signs of anger and curbing them before the explosion, is an important part of Dr. Val's training. Learning emotional regulation is a cornerstone of her approach.

I do work with individuals around issues with anger, irritability, and frustration. However, I don't provide "anger management" courses or classes, or structured teaching in this regard. I recognize this can be helpful for some individuals, but prefer to work within the context of psychotherapy to understand and develop personal resources to manage emotional challenges. If you're looking for a structured class or program, I would recommend checking out community resources such as those offered by Catholic Family Services (note - you don't have to be Catholic!)

Living Well Counselling Services Inc., MA, MEd, RSW

4803 Centre Street NW, Ste 04, Calgary, Alberta T2E 2Z6 | 403-695-7911
At Living Well we do not believe in "anger management" alone, as this simply manages symptoms as opposed to finding a cure. There are often very good reasons people are angry, and we believe these reasons need to be attended to for proper treatment to take place. If you choose to work with one of our therapists, the therapy will offer you ways to cope when you're feeling angry, but also resolution to much of the anger you feel. This form of treatment is often far better to see long lasting results.

Anger is a normal reaction to a perceived injustice. It becomes problematic when expressed in ways that are inappropriate or harmful to ourselves and others. Signs of excessive anger include unexpected angry outbursts, constant conflict with others and persistent feelings of anger. Counselling can help you uncover the emotions underneath your anger and with the right tools you can identify your triggers, find healthy ways to cope with and express anger and heal the underlying root causes of your anger.

Anger is a two-edged sword. In one direction it can work for your good, telling you when things do not seem fair or right to you, and then giving you the motivation to do something about it. But in the opposite direction, anger can literally destroy you and those around you. Because this discrimination is not easily achieved, some people end up trying to avoid anger altogether, others express it passively, while yet others turn it outward in explosive, deliberate, or chronic anger. Counselling can help you learn how to express your frustrations in healthy ways and let go of your destructive anger. You can make the needed changes in your life.

Anger is neither good nor bad. Nobody makes you angry. Do you agree with these facts? Anger is a healthy emotion. Intense, yes, and sometimes seems too strong to handle. In therapy you can learn how to be the master of your anger, experience and express the vulnerable feelings anger sometimes masks and learn to make responsible choices of what you do when you are angry. As a Calgary counsellor I can provide you tools to get your needs met without having to rely solely on anger at work, in relationships, with your self and with others.

Kevin Fleming, Ph.D.
Coach/Change Agent/Consultant
Calgary, Alberta T1X 0L3 |
Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. Contact Grey Matters International, Inc now at kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or 877-606-6161.
