Anger Therapist

Sig Taylor, MSW, RSW, RMFT

Marriage & Family Therapist

1235 - 17th Ave. S.W., Suite 305, Calgary, Alberta

Anger usually results from a lack of awareness and skill in identifying and connecting with our internal experience and feelings. When this happens emotions get "bottled up" and anger is the inevitable result. I teach strategies and techniques to help clients learn to effectively deal, NOT AVOID, their feelings. Learning identify and accept our internal experience is the key to leading a meaningful and fulfilling life. The benefits are life changing - better relationships, less stress/anxiety and greater success and happiness.

Psychopharmacologist

Suite 500 Macleod Place II, 5940 Macleod Trail SW, Calgary, Alberta

Can my anger outbursts be treated with medication? The question should probably not be if it can be treated, but whether it should be treated with medication. Sometimes the anger is a symptom of a disorder, and the disorder needs to be treated. Highly driven men and women sometimes ‘act out’ their depression and have anger outbursts; clearly, they do not need anger management; they need medication for their depression. The elderly may also have anger outburst that are a symptom of a disorder, and then a pharmacological intervention is justified. Let Dr. Mervin (Paraklesis Counselling) come alongside you to help you with anger management and to discern whether pharmacotherapy is appropriate.

Anger Therapist

Sharon Stopforth, MSW, RSW

Registered Social Worker

226B-259 Midpark Way S.E., Calgary, Alberta

As a counsellor who has been working with clients for 15+ years, clients who have issues with anger management are often struggling with depression. From my experience, anger is a symptom of a problem rather than a cause. Anger often results when we find ourselves unable to cope with a situation in which we feel powerless and helpless. There is also a difference between anger and rage. Rage is anger that seems to come out of nowhere and feels out of control. Rage is often brought on by feelings of shame and feeling victimized. In my experience, when anger or rage goes unexpressed it often comes out in the body as pain, fatigue, or health issues.

Anger Therapist

Anu Chiarelli, RN, BA, MA, CSAT, CSOTP, CMAT

Certified Professional Counsellor, Registered Nurse, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, Certified Sex Offender Treatment Professional, Certified Multiple Addiction Therapist

Monterey Park, NE, Calgary, Alberta

Anger is a powerful emotion that tells that something needs to change. Anger can be destructive or empowering. Inappropriate expression of anger can disrupt work and relationships. Even though you may have been taught that anger is taboo, bottling up anger is not the answer either. Poorly managed anger can also lead to problems with physical health. Well managed anger can help protect personal boundaries. Often anger masks other underlying feelings that are more painful. Anu helps you to not only manage anger and act assertively, but discover what information anger gives you about what you need or what your anger may be hiding.

Anger Therapist

Brenda Duncan, MSW RSW

Clinical Social Worker

132 - 17th Avenue NW, Calgary, Alberta

I do work with individuals around issues with anger, irritability, and frustration. However, I don't provide "anger management" courses or classes, or structured teaching in this regard. I recognize this can be helpful for some individuals, but prefer to work within the context of psychotherapy to understand and develop personal resources to manage emotional challenges. If you're looking for a structured class or program, I would recommend checking out community resources such as those offered by Catholic Family Services (note - you don't have to be Catholic!)

Anger Therapist

Eunice Peterson, MA., R. Psych.

Registered Psychologist

#200, 2003-14 St. NW, Calgary, Alberta

Anger in its controlled form has protective benefits and is a secondary emotion. It covers up other emotions like fear or helplessness. Developing mastery over anger enables one to heal, self-advocate and achieve their desired outcomes with much less destructive consequences. This is the aim I have when I am supporting clients struggling with anger management.

You will learn to get rid of long term problem emotions and deal more effectively with tough or unresolvable situations.

Anger Therapist

Living Well Counselling Services Inc., MA, MEd, RSW

Counsellors, Psychologist & Social Worker

4803 Centre Street NW, Ste 04, Calgary, Alberta

At Living Well we do not believe in "anger management" alone, as this simply manages symptoms as opposed to finding a cure. There are often very good reasons people are angry, and we believe these reasons need to be attended to for proper treatment to take place. If you choose to work with one of our therapists, the therapy will offer you ways to cope when you're feeling angry, but also resolution to much of the anger you feel. This form of treatment is often far better to see long lasting results.
