I offer counselling for anger. Did you know that anger is a primal emotion, meaning that it is an automatic "reaction" to situations, located in the hind brain along with functions such as breathing and heart rate? Humans use anger as an unconscious defence mechanism when they feel threatened, which indicates that it is an emotion actually based in fear. It is important to understand this in order to be able to empathize with these people, making them feel safe enough to let their guard down and reveal what they are so afraid of. The anger then fades away and I am able to teach them how to rewire their brains in order to "respond" to stressful situations rather than react without thinking.

I help clients manage anger with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a research-based approach in which I am certified. I help clients view anger as a helpful emotion if managed properly. I focus on clients reducing the intensity of their anger internally and expressing the concerns underlying their anger in a constructive manner.

Anger can be a healthy response to negative treatment or events. We’ve all gotten angry and it can help to communicate to others that we’re not okay with something. In fact, not having the ability to feel anger is a whole other issue. However, for some people, uncontrollable, overly frequent or inappropriate expressions of anger can damage relationships, career success or more. Shift Psychological can help the anger management process by identifying and treating the origins of the anger – the messages about self and the world that cause it. Then, using our unique approach we remove them. This results in an absence of reaction and an appropriate level of calm.

I approach the problem of anger differently from most therapists. Instead of struggling to fight against and manage anger, I encourage people to examine why anger is there and how it protects him or her so he or she can choose to do something different through the tools and strategies developed in sessions. Anger, like all strong emotions, is telling us something. If we can understand it, then it will lose its power over us. This frees us up to make different decisions about how we react with those around us that can be more aligned with who we want to be with those closest to us. This values-driven approach guides behaviour change long-term.

Healthy, adaptive anger establishes safe boundaries and prevents one from being violated. Unhealthy, maladaptive anger is an unregulated emotion that can lead to rage and potentially sever your connection with others. During our counselling sessions you will learn the differences between adaptive and maladaptive anger and will engage in skill-building practices that both keep you safe as well as connected in your relationships.

Anger is a powerful emotion that tells that something needs to change. Anger can be destructive or empowering. Inappropriate expression of anger can disrupt work and relationships. Even though you may have been taught that anger is taboo, bottling up anger is not the answer either. Poorly managed anger can also lead to problems with physical health. Well managed anger can help protect personal boundaries. Often anger masks other underlying feelings that are more painful. Anu helps you to not only manage anger and act assertively, but discover what information anger gives you about what you need or what your anger may be hiding.

Anger management is primarily about recognizing and learning about ourselves and how we deal with our world. Learning the many, many ways how anger impacts the important people in our lives in negative ways, and realizing how serious the consequences can be; can help to motivate us to develop strategies and better ways of dealing with our frustration and inner pain -- ways that won't alienate the people we love.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger.
