Alex Abdel-Malek, MSW, RCC

Hello! I am a senior therapist with over 20 years of clinical experience helping people to make transformative, positive, and lasting change in themselves and their relationships.

Some of the common kinds of concerns I see clients struggling with include:

  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Self-confidence concerns
  • Perfectionism
  • Relationship concerns
  • Past experiences of something traumatic that continues to get in your way
  • Not feeling good about the relationship with yourself

How I Can Help

In your moments of pain or stuckness, there are tremendous opportunities to heal and grow. I want to help you to bring your full resources forward to meet whatever circumstance you find yourself in at this moment.  We begin simply with starting where you are and meeting you in your experience.

I will help you to find ways to become an ally to yourself during your time of pain. Psychotherapy is a process that asks a lot of you as the client--a willingness to look at yourself and consider changes that will help advance your life in the direction you want. But the rewards are life enhancing and deeply meaningful. My approach is about helping you to do more than solve a current problem or circumstance--it is to help you to grow your capacities to be strong, healthy and resilient as a person.

It has been tremendously rewarding for me to be a part of a positive change process for clients over the years. One of the most enjoyable parts of therapy for me is seeing you get to a place that exceeded your own personal expectations. To find out you are capable of healing and growing into the kind of person you want to be. A more full version of yourself: confident, grounded, and feeling like you have a say in shaping the direction your life takes.

Key Approaches to Therapy

The question is not "what is the best approach to therapy?" but in fact "what is the ideal approach for a particular person with particular issues at a particular point in time?".  I am well-trained across a wide spectrum of approaches to therapy that I may draw upon to find a great fit for you in the healing process. I use psychodynamic, interpersonal process, Satir systemic therapy as key theories to inform my work with you, though I am trained in others which I may draw upon.

These approaches value our therapy relationship closely and are characterized by strong, positive beliefs in your capacities. They are also the most effective approaches I know of to help you create lasting, positive changes in yourself.

My Experience and Credentials

Not all therapists in private practice work in the same way or have the same level of experience. I have been in practice for over 20 years and have worked in many different settings during that time. This has given me exposure to--literally--working with thousands of clients in all kinds of circumstances. I have been a clinical supervisor to other therapists and taught therapists all over Western Canada on specialized therapy topics.

My formal education is a Masters Degree in Social Work (Clinical Specialization) from McGill University. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor in British Columbia.
